Large Turnout For
Bethpage Memorial Day Parade
It was a beautiful day in Bethpage on Monday,
for the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Service.
Stewart Avenue was lined on both sides
with people out to view the parade. Everyone
who wasn't marching was out there to cheer on
everyone who was.
The parade was sponsored by Butehorn Bros.
Post 4987, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Archie Mc-
Cord Post and Unit 86, American Legion and
Auxiliary; Bethpage Fire Department and Auxiliary;
Bethpage Board of Education-District 21
and Town Board of Oyster Bay. Participating
Organizations who made a great showing were:
Knights of Columbus, Columbiettes, Bethpage
Senior Citizens, St. Martin's Senior Citizens, Boy
Scouts Troop 604, Girl Scouts, 4-H, St. Martin of
Tours School, Bethpage Womens' Club, Little
League, Bethpage Midget Football, Police Boy's
Club. The marching band music, which kept
eveyone in step was provided by Bethpage
Senior and Junior High School; Central Boulevard,
Charles Campagne and Kramer Lane
Schools.
As the parade ended at the Bethpage Community
Park, an impressive service was given
by the veterans organizations and wreaths were
placed at the memorial stones in the park, the
first by the Gold Star Mothers. Additional
memorial wreaths were placed by Veterans of
Foreign Wars; American Legion and Auxiliary,
Knights of Columbus, Bethpage Senior Citizens,
St. Martins Senior Citizens, Girl Scouts, 4-H,
Bethpage Womens Club, St. Martin of Tours
School children.
Edna Kaufman was the vocalist of the day accompanied
by the BHS band and Mary Mertz on
piano.
Winners of the VFW essay contest read their
essays on America followed by Benediction by
Rev. James Taylor of St. Pauls Lutheran
Church.
During the firing of salute by the VFW, taps were
played by Al Nigro, BHS.
The Retirement of Colors marked the official
end of the Parade and Service.

Receives Service Award

Nassau Probation Officer Barbara Pilatsky
was in Albany recently to receive the New York
State Division of Probation 1980 Service Award,
County Executive Francis T. Purcell announced.
A nine-year member of the Nassau County
Department of Probation, she serves with the
Family Court Division supervising young girls.
In that capacity, she established a workshop
program for youngsters in her charge to help
them improve their self-images, control their
lives and make decisions.
"Miss Pilatsky was nominated for the state
award by Nassau Probation Commissioner Louis
J. Milone," Purcell said, "and was subsequently
chosen for this outstanding honor. Officer
Pilatsky dedicated a tremendous number of
hours to preparing herself to run the workshop
and in giving the courses to these young women.
She deserves much credit for her work."
Her caseload includes 16 youngsters from the
Massapequas, Amityville, Bethpage,
Farmingdale, Roosevelt and Uniondale. A native
of Freeport and a graduate of the community
schools, she is a magna cum laude graduate of
the State University at Buffalo. She was married
last October to a co-worker; Senior Probation
Officer Aron Silverberg.
