Local Water Contamination Forum Set
"TOXICS ON TAP," the chemical contamination of Long Island's
drinking water supplies, will be discussed at a special program at the
Bethpage Public Library on Tuesday, January 20, at 8 P.M. Discussion
will focus on the recent study, 'TOXICS ON TAP," by the New York
Public Interest Group (NYPIRG) detailing the findings and
recommendations of a two-year study of Long Island's drinking water
supplies. That report has aroused much concern and some controversy
among Long^ Island residents and public officials. The NEW YORK
PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP, INC. (NYPIRG) is a not-for-profit,
non-partisan research and advocacy organization directed by New
York State college students.
Guest speakers will be: WALTER HANG, a staff scientist with
NYPIRG, who co-authored "Toxics on Tap" and is the coordinator of
NYPIRG's Toxic Chemicals Project; and MICHAEL J. ALARCON, the
Director of the Bureau of Public Water Supply of the Nassau County
Department of Health, who assisted in the preparation of the department's
evaluation of "Toxics on Tap," presenting specific responses to
the findings and recommendations in that study.
Americans take clean drinking water for granted. When a twist of the
faucet brings it pouring out, there is no visible indication that it is scarce
or unhealthy. Knowing very little about where their drinking comes from
or how it is purified, most people assume it is abundant and, for the most
part, safe to drink. This opinion is widely held despite unmistakable signs
that water quality is not what it used to be. In recent years all too many of
the nation's rivers and lakes have been discovered to be highly contaminated
with toxic chemicals. The Bethpage Public Library offers this
program in the interest of bringing the public's attention to a matter
which affects our daily lives and of clarifying the issues involved.
Admission to the program is free and all are welcome.
