They 're All Running For Something
This past Sunday, a pre-announcement
announcement was made in Farmingdale.
Town Councilman Greg Carman, it was
announced, would seek the Republican (and
perhaps the Conservative) nomination for
Congress (See Estelle Weinig's related story
on page 7 for the specifics).
Hundreds of people and one Pooka showed
up for the pre-announcement announcement.
Senator Ralph Marino, who is seeking reelection
this year attended the festivities. So
did Doug Hynes. He's seeking an assembly
seat. So is Peter Pooka. He has the hardest
task of all. Trying to unseat an incumbent who
has run unchallenged for the past fifty years.
Paul Dana Jr., Larry Buzzerio and Bill
Ellinger are running too. Not for office. For
one last moment in the spotlight.
In the photo, above, the candidates pose for
the TRIBUNE, front row (1-r) Senator Marino,
Paul Dana, Larry Buzzerio, Councilman
Carman, Bill Ellinger and candidate Doug
Hynes. In the back row, Peter Pooka.
Dana, Buzzerio and Ellinger were Bethpage
heros of the late forties and 1950. They were of
course, basketball players; outdoor basketball
players. The kind of players that played
basketball for ten hours every Saturday.
By 1951, this trio began to fade out of the
picture, but their reign was the longest in the
history of outdoor Bethpage basketball. They
owned the north court south of the Powell
Avenue School for almost ten years. This is a
record that will never be broken, because they
owned a court that had nine-foot high baskets.
There are no more such courts.
A new park will be dedicated this Spring,
where the old court and school used to stand.
The old court is being covered over and ten
foot baskets will tower over it.
Plans for the dedication are for around April
15. Dana, Buzzerio and Ellinger have thrown
down the gauntlet. "Let us play," they say,
"just one more time. One more shot at glory.
Against all comers." All comers that is, that
played the court from 1940 to its early demise
in 1962. Three man teams, trying to see if you
can go back once more.
Dana, Buzzerio and Ellinger are the first
official entrants in this unofficial geriatric
Olympic basketball event that the Town
probably won't sanction anyway for fear of a
heart attack on the brand spanking new court.
We know of a group from the fifties and a
group from the sixties that may sign on. It's
possible the game may have to be played after
