A Sign
Of The Times In her column on page 4,
Estelle Wenig interviews an
employee of Consumer's Pood
Outlet. His words are mild, but
the employee clearly blames
Bethpage for lack of support
toward the store. CFO is bailing
out of the Bethpage Shopping
Center. But it is not by any means
all the town's fault.
CFO clearly misjudged the
town of Bethpage from the very
beginning. The store's operators
thought that the village's
residents would rush to the store
to buy in bulk, an excellent way of
shopping if you have a freezer
and large storage capacity. But
CFO's bulk type plan wasn't
much cheaper than Foodtown's
unit priced items. Bethpagers, as
a result, stayed away from CFO
in droves.
When CFO gave up on bulk
sales and tried to compete head
to head with Foodtown, they
drastically cut back on personnel.
Or at least seemed to,
especially at the check-out
counters.
The item the store needed to
sell most, it lacked. That item
was service. Its lack of service
probably was the poison that did
the store in.
Other merchants in the
shopping center have fought to
maintain their prices and to give
exceptional service. Despite the
fact that their supposed main
drawing card, a super market,
was not pulling in the people.
Despite the fact that commuters
to the city tie up the parking lot
by illegally leaving their cars
there, making it difficult, at
times to find a spot to park and
shop.
Despite the fact, that they have
to deal with the residents mostly
driving to larger (and ultimately
more expensive shopping malls).
Despite the fact that sewer
construction has just about done
in the merchants of this town.
Despite all these facts, the
majority of the business people in
Bethpage have retrenched and
hung-in. Not all of them made it.
The most surprising failure has
to be Long John Silvers.
Beautifully appointed, with
excellent food at moderate
prices, friendly service and easy
parking. The Bethpage store was
the showcase restaurant for the
chain. The one you saw in the
national television commercials.
It is shuttered now. Why?
Cazzio's Italian kitchen, came
to Bethpage, so to speak for a cup
of coffee. TheyVe gone. Closed just
a short time ago. The merchants
give to this town. The shopping
center alone pays over $100,000
dollars a year in taxes.
Maybe it's time, we. you and I,
started giving back. You only
have to do one thing, shop locally.
As an added bonus, you'll save
forty six cents a mile.
