Recognize This Man Or This Car?
Nassau Police Homicide Detectives are seeking the
public's aid in identifying a hit and run driver who fled the
scene of a fatal auto accident on June 16,1980 at 11:35 P.M.
The accident, which occurred at Merrick Road and
Sycamore Avenue, Wantagh, left 16 year old Linda Sottilare
dead and Thomas Vogel, Jr. critically injured. The couple
were riding a motorcycle when a light blue Volkswagen
"Bug" came off the Wantagh Parkway and struck the
motorcycle.
The VW was a 1970 to 1975 that should have damage to the
front and passenger side. The directional signal housing and
lens may be missing.
The Volkswagen was operated by a male white, 25-30 years
old, fair complexion, clean shaven, with dark hair. It is
believed that there was a passenger in the auto but no
description is available.
Anyone with information about the car and/or driver is
urged to call the Homicide Squad at 535-5120 or 746-1195. All
calls will be kept confidential.
Eagles Conference II Champions
The Bethpage Golden Eagles won the Conference II Championship Sunday, November 30
at Hofstra University, defeating Plainedge 32-21 before a screaming crowd of 3,500. The
Golden Eagles' defense held Plainedge to 41 yards rushing, 121 yards passing and only
seven first downs.
'We knew we had a good defensive, team," claimed coach Howie Vogts. "and wanted to
give our offense a boost. We usually run but quarterback Dan Boltja had been coming on,
throwing well. We decided to implement our running game."
It worked. Boltja was 11 for 23 for 202 yards and two scoring tosses to Tom Bianco, who
had scoring catches of 28 and 20 yards as well as four for 54 yards more. Greg King also
caught five for KM) yards.
Bethpage took an early lead on Marty Conway's 27-yard field goal and Bianco's first
score.
The Red Devils came back when quarterback Phil Pagano nassed for 23 yards to John
Chiofalo for a touchdown. "With Paul Greenberg sidelined with a dislocated elbow, we had
to go to Chuck Schiavetta more," added Vogts. We ran plays off Tony Piccolo's back and we
were successful.
After Ron Draghi batted away a pitch by Pagano into the end zone for a safety and Bianco
was glue-fingered on a Boltja toss, the Eagles were up 20-7.
But Craig Berge made it interesting racing up the left sideline for an 85-yard gallop on
Conway's kickoff after the Bianco score, closing to 20-14.
Schiavetta opened it up again with an 11-yard score on a pitch left by Boltja and Bethpage
solidified the victory when defensive end Dan Dunn picked off a flat pass and galloped 61
yards to pay dirt for his first ever six-pointer.
Congratulations guys and Coaches Howard Vogts. Tom Beck, William La Salla and Tony
Rossolino. by Jean Brown
