Republicans Leave Dems
in Electoral Dust
D'Amato -Carman - Marino win big
Republican U.S.Senate - Dems still hold House
In an overwhelming landslide victory, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan soundly defeated incumbent Jimmy
Carter last Tuesday night, while in local elections many incumbents also went on to victory.
At 11:00 am, Veterans Day, November 11, The Archie
McCord Post H 86, The American Legion and the Butehorn
Post # 4987 of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, will hold a joint
memorial service at the Bethpage Community Park in front
of the Veterans Memorial Monuments.
The two veterans organizations will place a wreath at the
monuments and prayers will be offered which will be
followed by the playing of taps.
The public is asked to attend this brief service to honor our
veterans, both living and dead, who served America.
Receiving 51-percent of the nation's vote, Reagan steam-rolled
over Carter for victory, with the incumbent conceding
the election even before voting was concluded on the west
coast. In total, Carter carried only seven states bringing him
49 votes in the electoral college. Reagan, in contrast, gained
the support of 42 states in the union which earned him 469
electoral votes. He needed only 270to be elected. Independent
John Anderson took seven-percent of the vote but did not
carry a single state.
In the State Senate race at press time, Republican
Conservative, Right To Life candidate Alfonse D'Amato is
claiming victory in that contest. At one point in the race with
53-percent of the state's ballots counted, D'Amato was
leading by as much as 146,480 votes. However Democratic
hopeful Elizabeth Holtzman was not conceding defeat just
yet and got a judge to impound all paper ballots for a recount
saying the race was just too close. The predicted D'Amato
win brings an end to the 34 year career of incumbent Jacob K.
Javits, who was running on the Liberal ticket following his
defeat by D'Amato in the Republican primaries earlier this
year.
In campaigns closer to home, Congressman Thomas
Downey handily defeated Republican challenger Louis
Modica in the race for the 2nd Congressional District. When
asked at his campaign headquarters at the Narragansett Inn
in Lindenhurst how it felt to be elected to his fourth term in
congress, the 31-year old Democrat smiled broadly and said
"I'm very excited about it. We won, and we won big in the
face of a Republican landslide in the presidential race, you
just can't beat that."
When asked if his constituency could expect changes from
his past performance in congress, Downey quickly answered
"No, but I do want to work with President Reagan and help
implement any programs he proposes that I agree with."
Incumbent, Senator Owen Johnson won easily over
Democratic candidate Stephen Braslow in the contest for the
fourth senate district seat. It will be the fifth term for the 51-
year old Republican, who also ran on the Conservative and
the Right To Life ticket as well.
After learning of his victory at Babylon Town Republican
headquarters in West Babylon, Johnson was obviously happy
over his win. "I'm very delighted," he said, "and I'm very
happy the voters felt I was doing the job they wanted."
Johnson also said that he would continue to be a "strong
voice" in the senate for his district's constituents and was
looking forward to working on such problems there as water
purity and the rising crime rate.
In other local elections, Republican William Carney
defeated Democratic newcomer Thomas Twomey in the bid
for the seat in the first congressional district, while incumbent
Caesar Trunzo trounced Democratic challenger William
Quinn in the third senate district race.
In state assembly races of local interest, incumbent Louis
T. Howard, running on the Republican, Conservative and
Right To Life lines, defeated Democrat Michael Silber in the
race for the ninth asssembly district while incumbent
Antonia Rettaliata defeated Democrat Jeffrey Wenig in the
eighth assembly district contest.
