Bethpage Hostel
Plans Dropped
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Salvatore R. Mosca today
(September 9,1980) announced that the house at 102 Haypath
Road, Bethpage, has been dropped from consideration for
use as a hostel.
"I have learned that the State Office of Mental Retardation
and Development Disabilities has given up its interest in
locating a hostel at this site," Mosca said.
Mosca has objected to the 102 Haypath Road location last
January, noting the heavy traffic, already in the area, would
pose a danger to the residents of the proposed hostel. "The
State did not express a reason for its loss of interest," Mosca
noted,' 'but I believe the practical problems with the location
would have worked against the effectiveness of the originally
planned program."

Darrow In Bethpage
Meet and spend an evening with one of America's most
famous trial lawyers and intriguing personalities when the
Bethpage Public Library presents Mel Feit in "Clarence
Darrow: a one-man play" on Tuesday, September 23rd at 8
P.M. The play, by David W. Rintels is based on Irving Stone's
book, "Clarence Darrow For the Defense."
Darrow was an intelligent, lively, witty, stubborn, and
loving man. As a lawyer, he fought for the weak and for the
poor. He fought for liberty and life and against intolerance.
In this full-length play, he recalls his dramatic courtroom
battles and tells, with humor and charm, about the lighter
and more personal moments of his life.
The principal locations of the play are Darrow's Chicago
and Los Angeles law offices, his Chicago home, and courtrooms
in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boise, Los Angeles, Milwaukee,
Dayton, and Detroit. The play is set in 1925 and uses
a series of flashbacks to capture the highlights of Darrow's
exciting career.
During each performance, twelve members of the
audience will be asked to serve as "jurors" and to them
Darrow will plead the cases of John T. Scopes, Leopold and
Loeb, Eugene V. Debs, and others.
Mel Feit was most recently with the Hicksville-based
Theatre East, where he doubled as company manager and
actor. He studied acting at Penn State University and television
production and direction at Boston University.
Admission to the performance is free. Come early for best
seating.
