(W Fashioned Meeting
Old Bethpage village
restoration will re-create this
country's most revered
traditional form of grass roots
government with a mid-19th
century town meeting on
Saturday and Sunday, April 19
and 20.
This year the townspeople will
cast their ballots for the election
of officials at the Noon Inn, where
the polls will be open from 11a.m.
to 1 p.m. and again from 3 p.m. to
4:30 p.m. After attending a 2 p.m.
Temperance rally at the
crossroads, villagers and visitors
alike will convene at the Inn at
2:30 to debate a special resolution
placed before the citizenry.
Should the town prohibit the sale
/or use of intoxicating beverages
within its limits?
This resolution anticipates the
law which made New York a dry
state in 1855 and should provoke
as much passionate oratory
today as it did then.
Town meeting time signalled
the return of spring and the first
community-wide gathering of the
year In keeping with this
seasonal rite, activities at the
outdoor museum will also include
a militia drill on Saturday, parlor
music on Sunday and fiddle
music for both afternoons.

County Department of Recreation

Local Heroes Receive
Commendations
At a recent award ceremony
hosted by the Nassau County
Police Department, twenty-one
area residents received the
Department's highest Civilian
Commendation. Included among
the recipients were: Tim
McGovern (left) of Bethpage
and Chris Huber of Seaford,
receiving their awards from
Deputy Chief of Operations
William F. King. On December
21, 1979 at about 5:50 P.M. police
were called to investigate an auto
accident on Winding Road in
Bethpage. The involved auto was
totally engulfed in flames when
the first officer arrived.
McGovern and Huber were
passing by at the time and even
before police arrived had pulled
the driver, who was semi-concious,
from his auto. It was
the opinion of the investigating
officer that without the brave act
preformed by these two men the
driver would surely have burned
to death.
Hearty "soles" across Long
Island are getting ready for their
25-kilometer SUPER WALK to
help fight birth defects, on Sunday,
April 20th. Continuing to enjoy
the popularity that has made
its Walk-a-thon #1 on Long Island,
the March of Dimes reports that
over 15,000 people have already
registered for the BIG day.
Walkers will start their "metric
trek" at 8:00 A.M., beginning in
Nassau at Eisenhower Park, E.
Meadow; and for Suffolk
residents, at the Colonie Hill in
Hauppauge. Backed by pledges
for each kilometer, participants
will walk en masse from checkpoint
to checkpoint, stopping to
get route cards validated and enjoy
free snacks for extra "foot
power." Podiatrists and nurses
will be on hand at each rest stop
to provide first-aid services for
the throngs of walkers, who
range in age from 8 to 80.
Lending a helping hand, are
numerous companies who have
generously donated food and supplies
