Bethpage Rotary Sponsors Flag Dedication Ceremonies
Last Thursday marked the celebration of the first anniversary of the dedication
ceremonies for the replica of Grumman Apollo Lunar Module, which was presented to the
citizens of Bethpage on July 12, 1979 by the Grumman Corporation and Grumman
Aerospace Corporation. Tn honor of this occasion the Bethpage Rotary sponsored a Flag
raising ceremony which centered around the flagpole donated by the A.J. Gould Co. of
Bethpage.
The ceremony hosted by Bethpage Rotary President Anthony Sabino* was opened with an
invocation by Father Eugene McManus of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church. Town of Oyster
Bay Councilman Gregory W. Carman delivered the keynote speech.
In a statement to the TRIBUNE, Mr. Carman said, "Members of the Bethpage Rotary in
working with Grumman Aerospace Corporation have made a wonderful service project by
placing the Grumman Apollo Lunar Module in the center of the Bethpage community. It is
an example of the pride we all feel for Grumman and its magnificent contribution to the
mainstream of life on Long Island. It also reminds us that ours is a nation of destiny."
Councilman Carman presented a flag which had flown over the Capitol in Washington,
D.C. The flag came to the councilman at the request of Congressman Norman Lent. The
Bethpage Fire Dept. Hook & Ladder crew set the flag at the peak of the pole.
An honor guard from the American Legion Archie McCord Post ff 86 was represented by
Arthur Fruauff P.C^ Edward Leger P.C. and Bob King P.C. Representing the American
Legion Auxiliary Archie McCord Unit # 86 were Past Dept. President Kay Mazzie, Chaplain
Mabel Fingado, Lillian Sullivan and Jerri Blades. Grumman was represented by Vice
President Brian Masterson and Frank Massi.
Bethpage Rotarians included Jaime Ortiz who was a guiding force in the original project
to bring the L.E.M. replica to Bethpage, Rotary President Anthony Sabino, Past President
Ed Wilson, Nat Wolin who was instrumental in acquiring the flagpole for the dedication,
Jerry Logue, Ed Steiger, Leo Schottland, Dr. Frank Tortura, Harry Flor, Carmine
Biscardi, Dr. Phil Lembo and Frank Morrone. E.W.

lavarone Wins Local Pitch,
Hit & Run Competition
Michael lavarone of Cypress Ave. Bethpage, was the 10
year old winner in the Local Pitch, Hit & Run Competition
held July 14, 1980. This event was the first stage in the
national Pitch, Hit & Run Competition.
Michael excelled in the three key Pitch, Hit & Run skills:
pitching for accuracy, hitting for distance and running
against the clock to achieve the highest combined score of all
youngsters in the 10 year old group.
The Pitch, Hit & Run Competition, open to boys and girls
ages 8-13, was held at Community Park, Bethpage. At the
same time, more than 1,000 similar competitions were being
conducted nationwide. Pitch, Hit & Run, the Official Youth
Program of Major League Baseball, is sponsored as a public
service by local Burger King restaurants. The Pitch, Hit &
Run program was developed in cooperation with the
President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Michael is a student at Kramer Lane School and is a
member of the 1980 Championship Team of the Bethpage
Baseball Association AAA Division.
Michael was also one of the 15 boys selected to represent
his town in Tournament Play. In addition, Michael was voted
the most valuable player on his team in Hicksville Soccer last
season.
Pitch, Hit & Run Local Winners go on to compete at the
District Competition to be held at Baldwin Park on August 2,
at 12^:00 P. M. District winners are then eligible to compete in
Division Championships held at eleven Major League
Stadiums across the country. Out of this field of winners will
emerge the top twelve scorers in the nation (two in each age
group). These lucky youngsters will go on to compete at
historic Cooperstown, New York, home Baseball's Hall of
Fame and will receive their awards on-field prior to the
second game of the 1980 World Series.

Out of 100 girls from Nassau County, two local Bethpage girls, Laura Sottile and Sue
Maier, made the Nassau County Volleyball team that will compete against the Suffolk team
Unfortunately Laura dislocated her shoulder and was unable to continue tryouts however,
Sue Maier worked hard with the Nassau team and competed in tryouts against the best
players in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. At this try out she was chosen for the Long
Island Empire State Volleyball Team Scholastic Division. This team will compete at
Syracuse University, Syracuse, N. Y. on August 13-17.
The Empire State Games is a multi-sport event for amateur athletes, patterned after the
Olympic program. Following competition in six regions of New York State, winners numbering
some 5,000 will participate in the Aug. 13-17 competition.
Laura and Sue will both be seniors at Bethpage High School this fall.
