I Focus on Memorial Day
"I think that, as life is action
and passion, it is required of
~ a man that he should share
the passion and action of his
time at peril of being judged
not to have lived." ....
Holmes
These words, spoken by Oliver
Wendell Holmes on Memorial
Day in 1884, ring true today. We
live in times of trauma and worry
- about our hostages in Iran and
about our future.
Memorial Day, being observed
on May 26th this year, is not a
celebration, but a declaration of
our feelings toward our country
and the memory of the people
who have been killed in war.
Here in Bethpage, we are
fortunate to have the Bethpage
Memorial Committee. Prior to
the formation of this committee
over forty years ago, the
Memorial Day Parade was
loosely organized by the different
groups in town. The committee
was formed to take the responsibility
of operating the parade on
a permanent basis. It has been
successful to this day.
The American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the
Fire Department donate funds to
the committee to cover the costs
of the parade.
On Monday, May 26th, the
ceremonies will begin with a
religious service at 8 a.m. in St.
Martin of Tours Church, honoring
gold star mothers. Father
Murray is scheduled to preside.
Coffee and donuts will be served
in the cafeteria of the church for
those who attend the service.
Assembly for the parade will
begin at 9:30 a.m. The American
Legion and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars will leave from the
Post Off ice, go up Central Avenue
to Broadway and at the Fire
House, the Fire Department will
enter the parade. At Seamans
Avenue, the Knights of Columbus
falls in and the parade will
proceed to the Railroad station,
where all the other units will join
in. The Senior Citizens, many
youth groups and other civic
associations will march. The
parade is scheduled to continue
up Broadway to Benkhert Street,
make a right turn at Stewart
Avenue and continue to the
Community Park, where formal
ceremonies will take place at 11
a.m.
The officers of the Bethpage
Memorial Committee are:
President - Charles Schwarz;
Vice President - Everett Baldwin;
Secretary - Kay Mazzie;
Treasurer-Robert Gillespie.
The parade co-ordinators who
handle the physical running of
the parade are Robert King and
Everett Baldwin.
Each year around Memorial
Day many persons, clubs and
businesses honor a deceased
relative, friend, or business
associate with a donation to the
American Cancer Society.
Memorial cards and memorial
scrolls for group contributions
are available according to
Shirlee Vitulli, Memorial
Chairman of the Plainview/Old
Bethpage Branch.
Special occasion cards commemorating
birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries and other
special days of friends and
associates are also available.
They will receive a card communicating
your best wishes and
indicating your commitment to
cancer.
Memorials, special occasion
donations and legacies, gifts of
property, insurance policies and
gift annuities or trusts are
providing major support for the
Society's services. They fund
lifesaving education programs,
cancer screening clinics and
patient services as well as important
cancer research.
For information or to make a
donation call or write Mrs.
Shirlee Vitulli, at 143 Parkway
Drive, Plainview, NY 11803, 931-
5362 or the American Cancer
Society, Long Island Division at
535 Broad Hollow Road, Melville,
11747,420-1111.

In & Around Bethpage
During the past two weeks Old
Bethpage residents as well as the
Board of Education have been
expressing their opposition to
Nassau County's proposal to
erect a campsite adjacent to the
Town of Oyster Bay incinerator
located on Round Swamp Road.
What angers the two groups even
more is that Nassau County
already began work at the
location before they were given
an opportunity to express their
views begore the Nassau Board
of Supervisors as had been
planned on May 12.
On May 7 Plainview-Old Bethpage
School Board Presidents
Joan Shapiro speaking on behalf
of the school district (comprising
approximately 35,000 residents)
sent a letter to Nassau County
Board of Supervisors meeting on
May 12. Shapiro had also stated
that the Board of Education had
voted unanimously to oppose the
trailer campsite and could not
understand the "logic of playing
a recreation site in close
proximity to the Town of Oyster
Bay Incinerator and Town
Dump." In addition Shapiro
expressed her concern on the
location due to the fact that the
proposed location is within one-half
mile from an elementary
school and the Old Bethpage
Restoration Village. "The area,"
she said, "is alrady heavily
trafficked and would be an en-dangerment
for the children."
School board officials also expressed
their concern since there
are an abundance of rodents and
vermin that would further invade
the community if any land
clearing should occur.
Similar objections to the
location were expressed on May 3
when Old Bethpage residents led
by Assemblyman Louis Yevoli
marched to the proposed campsite
location carrying signs of
protest. The local homeowners
are equally annoyed that they to
were not given a chance to speak
before the County Supervisors
meeting, They seem to feel that
actual plans for the campsite had
Silver Anniversary
For Rev. Simmons
been in existance for some time;
otherwise work would not have
been initiated before they had a
chance to express their views.
Local campers have been
pressing for more campsites in
Nassau County for the past ten
years, and it has become obvious
that there is a definite need for
more camping facilities. It is
questionable as to whether
campers would consider this a
favorable location considering
the obnoxious odors that prevail
constantly from the garbage
incinerator. An alternative
location was recommended to the
Nassau Board of Supervisors at
the May 15 meeting. Yevoli had
suggested utilizing a section of
Bethpage State Park. However,
the alternative site was rejected
by the Nassau County Board. The
homeowners as well as Yevoli
feel that most of the members of
the Nassau County Board never
had occasion to inspect the
location and are certain that they
will reconsider once they take a
look at the proposed site.
