A New Park Is Dedicated To Our Firefighters

MONUMENT: Oyster Bay Town
officials join members of the
Dunn and Hassett families in
front of the monument erected to
the memories of Captain James
Dunn and Fireman Robert
Hassett at the Bethpage Firemen's
Memorial Park. Town

Hasset, Mary Ann Hassett, Carol
Hassett, Mrs. Dunn, and [kneeling]
Thomas Hassett with son,
Sean.
At opening ceremonies at Beth-page
Firemen's Memorial Park,
a monument from the Oyster Bay
Town Board was unveiled,
commemorating the park in
recognition of Bethpage
firemen's unselfish service to the
community. The monument also
pays tribute to fallen firemen
Robert Hassett and Captain
Joseph Dunn.
In May, 1978, Dunn and Hassett
were overcome by chlorine gas
generated by pool chemicals in a
blaze at Brothers Three on
Hempstead Turnpike.
Vincent Monacco, who was fire
chief at the time of the tragedy,
(which was senselessly caused by
a disgruntled ex-employee of the
pool company) recalled the day
as one of Bethpage's saddest
days and praised the T.O.B. for
recognizing the Volunteers with
this new park.
Chief James Emken Jr., expressed
his thanks to the Board
on behalf of all of the volunteer
firemen for the honor and the
remembrances of Captain Dunn
and firefighter Hassett.
Similar comments were made
by Fire Commissioners Michael
Mancini, Dave Nathan and Nick
Markakis.
Members from the American
Legion and Veterans of Foreign
Wars acted as color guards for
the ceremonies.
Formerly owned by the Bethpage
School District, the
property was donated to the
Town in June, 1977, when the
transfer of the property was
placed on the ballot and approved
by residents of the Bethpage
School District. The stipulation
from the School Board members
was that upon the community's
approval, they would donate the
property to the town if the town
would agree to develop it as a
recreational facility for the
young people of Bethpage.
Four days after the tragic fire,
it was agreed by the Town,1 that
the park would be developed
honoring all the : volunteer
firemen who unselfishly give of
themselves in the service of the
community and in the memory of
Dunn and Hassett.
The proclomation presented by
the Town of Oyster Bay reads as
follows:
WHEREAS: throughout the
years volunteer firemen, and
particularly those serving the
Bethpage community, have daily
provided invaluable and often
heroic services protecting the life
and property of countless
residents from the ravages of
fire, and
WHEREAS: on May 25, 1978,
two members of the Bethpage
Fire Department, Captain
Joseph Dunn and Fireman
Robert Hassett, courageously
gave their lives in the performance
of their duty while
fighting a fire and, in so doing,
exemplified the highest standards
of dedication and self-sacrifice
for the benefit of others.
