Kanichi Wa (Hello) And Welcome To Long Island
By Estelle Wenig
At this moment, Japanese student, Chikako
Kobayashi is probably telling her classmates at
Nippon College in Tokyo'of the exciting week she
just spent in and around Bethpage.
The 22-year old Olympian athlete was the guest
of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ippolito, long-time Bethpage
residents. The Ippolitos were one of 59 host
families located in Nassau County to offer Tokyo's
Nippon College health and physical education
students a little taste of true American spirit this
past week.
Coordinated by the Nassau County Department
of Parks and Recreation, along with administrators
from Nippon College, the exchange
program could expand into a yearly cultural
exchange.
The College sent 15 of their athletes who are
scheduled to compete in the summer Olympics in
Moscow (providing Japan does not join the
boycott.)
Last week, the students demonstrated their
talents in gymnastics, wrestling, dance and
shorinji-kempo, an ancient Japanese martial-arts
exercise for "perfection of self", at the Nassau
Community College gymnasium before more than
one thousand Nassau County students.
For Chikako and the Ippolitos, it all started last
Tuesday evening when they met at Nassau
Community College. Arriving back at the Ippolito
home, Chikako spent Wednesday at Bethpage
High School with Cheryl Ippolito, an eighteen
year-old senior at the school where Chikako
gleamed a glimpse of an American student's
school day. Later, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor
Joseph Colby presented Chikako with a
proclamation from the Town and gpve her the
opportunity to observe some of the workings of oiir
local government at Town Hall. Colby is pictured
with Chikako and Cheryl in the above photo.
Cheryl and Chikako spent the remainder of the
afternoon shopping, eating pizza and having ice
cream at Friendly's. That evening, Cheryl gave a
demonstration of her own gymnastic skills in
Wantagh.
Chikako had the opportunity of trying Chinese
cooking at the Mah Johng restaurant and compared
samplings of Japanese food at the Mt. Fuji
restaurant with her native fare.
Thursday was devoted to the exhibition program
at Nassau Community College followed on
Friday's.visit to New York City.
Of course Chikako and the Ippolitos sat down to
a "traditional American family dinner at the
Ippolito home and the next daj<, Saturday, Chikako.
hugged and kissed the Ippolito family, with all
trying to hold back the tears as they bade each
other Sayonara. (In the photo at right Chikako and
Cheryl are pictured with Estelle.)
