In And Around Bethpage
Bethpage residents cheered
with enthusiasm last Thursday
evening at the Nassau Coliseum
as they watched the New York
Arrows Soccer team score their
winning shot. There could be no
mistake in feelings from all those
Bethpagers that observed this
new and exciting indoor and fast
moving sport - the true feeling
and spirit of "Living & Loving in
Bethpage" vibrated through the
large circular arena.
"Bethpage Night at the Coliseum"
last Thursday featured
our very own talented Bethpage
High School Marching Band providing
the music along with our
J.V. and Varsity Bethpage High
School kickline ~ and of course
Peter Pooka (Bethpage's very
own candidate for the Easter
Bunny) all under the very
capable direction of Cohen,
Moore and Niemezyk, faculty
members from our Bethpage
School System.
T.V. Cameras televised the
special event as the Bethpage
marching band provided truly
professional entertainment - it
made one feel extremely proud of
our fine school system. Our
Bethpage high school students
were obviously proud to represent
their community at this truly
unique event.
The Hostel on Haypath
And while Bethpagers were
cheering at the coliseum, another
segment of the Bethpage community
was concerned with two
very real problems that now exist
in our little hamlet. First, being
the sewers and secondly the
state's proposal to house eight
severly retarded adults in a
private home located at 102
Haypath Road.
In order to find some answers
I spoke with Councilman Mosca
and Assemblyman Yevoli this
past week pertaining to the
"hostel" fOr the mentally retarded.
According to Councilman
Mosca, the town board has not to
date received any official notice
from the State on their intent to
purchase the proposed location
as was mentioned at a recent
Bethpage Civic Association
meeting by the State Mental
Department official. Accordingly,
State Mental Department official
had indicated at the Civic
•meeting that the state had plans
to notify the Town of Oyster Bay
within the week of their plans to
purchase the premises located at
the corner of Haypath and Plain-view
Roads. The town, according
to the state official, would then
have had forty days to either approve
the site, find another location
if they felt the selection was
unsuitable or show that a similar
facility now existed within a one-mile
radius of the proposed location.
Also the question arose as to
whether or not the present
owners and occupants, the
Robinsons had any affiliation
with the state as it was mentioned
that he presently is a building
contractor. In my speaking with
Assemblyman Yevoli, he showed
me a copy of a letter he received
from James Introne. Commissioner
for the State Department
of Mental Affair; the response
from Yevoli's letter dated
February 5. Introne's response
clearly stated that Mr. Robinson
is not employed by the State of
New York; in fact that he is a
private builder. However, the letter
went on further to state that
Mr. Robinson had represented
two other sites as a private contractor,
now being used for a
similar facility located in Suffolk
County, presently being operated
by Catholic Charities.
Sewer Construction
On the matter of the sewer construction
now progressing rapidly
throughout all directions "In &
Around Bethpage". I spoke with
both Fred Ippolito, Commissioner
of Planning and Development
for the Town of Oyster Bay
and Peter Henaghan, plumbing
inspector for the Town. Ippolito
had this to say "Do not be in-
