For Solid Waste
OYSTER BAY TOWN SUPERVISOR Joseph Colby (left) and State
Senator Ralph J. Marino review legislation allowing Town to contract
for solid waste recovery plant. Marino introduced two bills in
Albany that would open the door to efficient methods of recycling and
disposing of solid waste within five years in the Town of Oyster Bay.
Colby said state approval will permit Town to act on bids this year.
State Senator Ralph J. Marino modern, effective way possible
and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
Joseph Colby have announced
introduction of a proposal in
Albany that will allow the Town
of Oyster Bay to contract for construction
and operation of a solid
waste recovery plant within its
borders. The facility will provide
the Town with an opportunity to
manage solid waste in the most

Grants
The IsTand Trees School

approval for four grants.

grant will allow the district to
hire additional hourly certified
Special Education and Speech
Teachers to work with handicapped
students.
A Title IV-B Grant was written
to construct and equip a media
center in the Sparke Elementary

of this grant, every school

Under the Youth Education and
Training Program of Nassau
County, the district has received
a grant that allows for the employment
of disadvantaged
Island Trees students between
the ages of 14 and 18. Presently,
the district is employing 18
youngsters under this program.
To assure the economic feasibility
of a recovery plant, Supervisor
Colby has asked that the
Town of Oyster Bay be given
authority to manage all solid
waste generated within the township's
borders. The City of Glen
Cove, however, is exempt from
Town rule. Colby said a solid
waste recovery plant must be
designed to handle 250,000 tons

St. Vincent de Paul
Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Edward Murtagh of Rockville
Centre, President of the Long
Island St. Vincent de Paul
Society, will address the Beth-page
Rotary Thursday, March 15
on the occasion of the Society's
tenth anniversary at its Bethpage
headquarters and its expansion
to larger offices.
The Society recently purchased
the building at 259-263 Broadway,
which is adjacent to its present
two-story office building at 249
Broadway, Bethpage.
The newly-purchased building,
a six-room house with a tailor
shop and beauty salon in front
was owned by long-time Bethpage
residents Mr. and Mrs.
Salva tore Felice who retired to
Florida after selling their home
to the Society.
After renovating the building to
conform with the basically
colonial motif of its present offices,
the Society plans to transfer
its Thrift Shop, now housed
at 249 Broadway, to the new
building. The building at 249
Broadway will be entirely converted
to offices in addition to
getting an exterior "facelift" of
repairs and a fresh coat of paint.
Luke Smith, Executive Secretary
of the Long Island St. Vincent de
Paul Society noted that the
, renovation would proceed immediately.
Our expansion in Bethpage
reflects the Society's expanded
services to the community", said
Smith, who estimated that the
Society's Bethpage central office
now serves approximately 6,000
families a year, up from 2,500 ten
years ago. In addition, the
Society also helps scores of Long
Island families through its 87
parish conferences in Nassau and
Suffolk. These services include
material aid, advocacy with local
bureacracy and all other
assistance needed by families in
today's complex society. The
additional office space will also
enable the Society to expand its
special services for employment
counselling, job development and
criminal justice counselling. The
Bethpage office presently employs
eleven people.
