How We Can
Honor
The Hostages
THE WHITE HOUSE
Washington
Dear Editor:
Many Americans are looking
for a way to express concern for
their fellow citizens being held
hostage in Iran that is consistent
with this country's respect for
law. As you know, the American
Charge in Iran, Bruce Laingen,
who is being held at the Foreign
Ministry, has suggested that
church bells be rung each noon
until the hostages are released.
Several members of Congress
and the.Attorney General also
have suggested .that Americans
write the Iranian Mission at the
United Nations to demand
release of the hostages.
The President endorses these
suggestions.
It is of overriding importance
that Iranian authorities understand
that Americans are
united in their determination not
to yield to blackmail and in the
demand for the safe return of the
hostages. Your support for these
two suggestions will help prevent
any miscalculation of where
Americans stand in this time of

Sewer construction has played
havoc with any beautification
effort in our village. However,
since it is hopefully somewhere
near completion, it is time for a
general clean-up.
The Women's Club of Bethpage
is campaigning to encourage
businessmen and women to
improve the exterior of their
business establishment as part of
this clean-up project.
The first award of appreciation
for accomplishing a noticeable
improvement has been awarded
to the Looking Glass Hairstylists,
505A Stewart Ave., Bethpage,
just north of the Railroad Tracks
and where construction has been
delayed the longest.
Pictured are Women's Club
vice-president, Jean Watson
presenting a certificate of merit
to co-owners Sue Phillips and
Julie Williams. For a profile on
the partnership, see page 4,
where Julie and Sue are
presented as the TRIBUNE'S
Merchants of the week.

No Fires
Jim Fleming, well known Bethpage
resident, has retired from
the New York City Fire Department
after 23 years of service.
Jim is pictured at left besides Ira
Roberts, a Sears retiree, as they
celebrated Jim's retirement in
• the Central Park Inn.
Jim started as a fire fighter in
the South Bronx, an area where
you gain expertise fast;* or you
don't survive. Promoted to Fire
Marshall, Jim, was responsible
for over 300 arrests for arson.
While on a chase of a suspect,
Jim sustained an injury and after
much thought decided to retire.
"I love the work, and the fire
fighters of the South Bronx,"
says Jim, "and I'll probably go
back as a consultant. Meanwhile,
Jim has a chance to enjoy watching
his youngest child get
acclimated to school. Catherine
is a kindergarten student. Jim
and his wife Noreen are also the
parents of Jim jr. and Noreen II,
both Nassau Community College
students, and Mary Ann, who is in
high school.
Many readers called in last
week to query the TRIBUNE
about the unidentified woman in
the front-page story about the bus
trip from Bethpage to Madrid,
Spain.
It appears that this woman is
Michelle Agiesta, the person who
drove the bus, without relief, on
the remarkable, happy, yet
weary trip.
What is even more remarkable
than the bus trip is the fact that
the TRIBUNE failed to identify
the remarkable Michelle As any
reader knows, we take pride in
always identifying pictured
persons and getting their names
spelled absolutely right. You can
be assured that this will never,
ever happen again. Michelle is
pictured in the forefront of the
photo, just in front of DeWayne
Scott. Again, and especially to
you, our apologies MicheL
