What Is A Fireman ?
With next week (Oct. 7-13)
marking National Fire Prevention
Week, we will all be
reminded of the dedication of our
volunteer firemen who will be
making an extra effort to educate
us about fire safety in our homes.
Some time ago, I saw a
response to the question "What is
a fireman?" that I think accurately
reflects the concern and
contribution of these protectors
of our lives and homes. In
keeping with next week's theme,
I would like to share it with you:
He's the guy next door.
He's a man's man with the
sharp memory of a boy who
never got over the excitement of
engines and sirens.
He's a guy like you and me with
warts and worries and unfulfilled
dreams; yet he stands taller than
most of us.
He's a volunteer fireman.
He puts it all on the line when
the bell rings.
A fireman is at once the most
fortunate and the least fortunate
of men.
A firefighter's life is a story of
danger, fear, courage, ingratitude,
honor and satisfaction.
He's a man who savors life because
he has seen too much of
death. He's a gentle man because
he has seen too much of the awesome
power of violent forces out
of control. He's a man responsive
to a child's laughter because his
arms have held too' many small
bodies that will never laugh
again.
He's a man who appreciates
the simple pleasures of life - hot
coffee held in numb, unbending
fingers-- the flush of fresh air
pumping through smoke and fire-convulsed
lungs - a warm bed for
bone and muscle beyond feeling -
the camaraderie of brave men -
the divine peace of selfless service
and a job well done in the
name of all men.
A firefighter's life is the life of
vigilance and extends far beyond
the world of smoke and flame. It
carries to the hearts of countless
women who share that vigil waiting
for their men to return.
It takes a very special kind of
community-minded persons to
give so much and get so little in
return.
He doesn't preach the brotherhood
of man - he lives it.

Come To The Firehouse
This Monday evening, October 8, the Bethpage Fire
Department will hold a fire prevention demonstration
in the main Fire House on Broadway. The fire prevention
demonstration will be held from 7:00 pm to
10:00 pm.
The Fire Department is holding the demonstration in
conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week
(October 7 - October 13). Although much of the
demonstration will be inside the firehouse, a raindate
has been set for October 10th. The main reason for the
raindate is a two-story smokehouse. t
The smokehouse will be set-up outdoors. The public
will get a chance to see how smoke detectors can save
lives through a visual demonstration of the smokehouse
detector.
Other events scheduled are a Kitchen Fire Demonstration,
a Hurst Tool Demonstration and motion
pictures.
Also on view, will be the various fire engines,
vehicles, equipment and one of the most modern dispatcher's
office you will ever see.
If you have never been to one of these demonstrations,
plan now to attend, especially with the children.
It is not only informative, if could be instrumental in
saving your life some day.
For more information, contact Steve Mafeton at the
firehouse. The phone number is 931-2660.
