Pee-Wees Open With 7-0 Win
The Bethpage Assn. of Midget Football officially
opened the season with a gala parade
last Sunday, complete with a Fire Dept.
escort, band and kick-line, cheerleaders, four
Cub teams and three Traveling teams.
The 10-year old Pee-Wees played a preseason
game with Plainedge and won 7 to 0.
After a shaky start in receiving the opening
kick-off and fumbling, the Bethpage
"Panthers" pawed their way back with a
recovery of their own. With QB Mike Moerler
directing the offense, backs Matt Grandinetti
and Mike Castles running wide, and back
Richie Schrage plunging up the middle, the
powerful "Pro" and "I" offense made
yardage all day.
The touch-down came on an electrifying 60-
yard end-around scamper by "Panther" right
end Andy Draghi. The extra point was made
by Grandinetti.
Bethpage lost scoring opportunities with
some penalties while driving toward the goal
line. Our offensive line opened up some nice
holes, and was variously composed of Chris
and Mike Roome, Scott Albert, Brian Burk,
Frank Liguori and Tom Bosco, while centered
by Mike DiGuiseppi.
Bethpage's defense usually stymied
Plainedge as the "Panthers" were led by
Tom Lillis, Draghi and Grandinetti, along
with excellent support by Nick Diomede,
Tony Dominick, Billy Doyle, Carmen
Morrone, Carmen Retcho, Ralph Ambrosio,
Chris Conry, Vin Liotta, Jim Lounsbury, Bob
Schreiber and Bob Zuk.
