VOL. 14 NO. TO Thursday, August 23,1979 20 cants per copy
You Weren't There? You Know What You Missed? Sure it rained Saturday night and the
Ninth Batallion Firemen's Parade
almost became history's first drive-in
parade as viewers lined the parade
route in their parked cars. But the rain
let-up enough for a thousand or so
brave souls to venture curbside for a
better view of the procession. The
parade started just south of the
firehouse and ended by the football
field at Bethpage High School. Tents
were erected for an old-fashioned block
party and participants enjoyed plenty
of clams, watermelon, hot dogs and a
few brews.
Teenagers gravitated toward the Disco contest
which was won by Scott and Marie Jean Greco of
Bethpage. The Junior Bethpage Volunteer
Firefighters were none the worse for the rain as
they took top honors for parade "appearance".
The Ladies' Auxiliary finished second in this
category.
With the sun drying the following afternoon out,
2,500 people packed the bleachers to watch the
day's competition. As expected, heavily favored
Hicksville took top honors for the day's events.
Bethpage finished in a tie for fifth place. Besides
the two trophies won on the previous evening, our
fire department captured trophies for first place
in "running hose replacement", fourth place in
the dummy contest (but then who'd want to be
first in a dummy contest) and third place in the
Ladies' Bucket.
Chief Vincent Monaco commented, "...the
cooperation received from all phases of our
community, town, county and school, were
remarkable. All the firefighters were proud to see
the community really pitch in to help one another.
Despite the hard work that went into this event,
it's all worthwhile today."
Lt. Don Barto, one of the organizers of the
tournament said, "The cooperation we received
from Bethpage was overwhelming." Lt. Steve
Maffetone added, "especially by the merchants
that donated the trophies."
Souvenirs marking the Ninth annual event were
available for collectors, the most popular being
the beer mug. There are a few mugs still
available at the Broadway Stationhouse for
anyone wishing a rememberance of this occasion.
One youngster with cotton candy in his hand
seemed to sum up the general feeling of the crowd
as he smiled at Chief Monaco and said, "Let's
have this every year. I'm having a ball."
Unfortunately, Bethpage isn't scheduled to host
the event again until 1989. By then, that youngster
may be in the event instead of watching it. Photos
of the parade and drill appear in the centerfold.
