Unfaithful --
After 40 Years
When you spend almost all of your life listening to
one specific radio station, it's not easy saying we're
through. But the day has come and the last link to The
Big Apple has been broken. We didn't mean to do it. It
started by accident. After all, they are right next to
each other on the AM dial and we frequently tuned in
the Long Island station before quickly realizing it
wasn't the Big W.
Then a few weeks ago, after tuning in again, we
paused, but only for one song, we silently promised
William B. He would understand. The song was
Frenesi with Artie Shaw. Instant childhood memories.
Then as the song ended and we began to tune out,
another voice from the past came through the car's
speaker. It couldn't be, but it was. Evelyn
Knigbt...EVELYN KNIGHT? We'd forgotten she even
existed. Evelyn Knight,...the beautiful blonde singer of
our childhood. William B., would have to wait. We
wanted more.
The next song, with still no announcement, was Bea
Wain-Deep Purple. We thanked God for the long gas
line we were on.
Finally, a disembodied voice came over. "You're
listening to 'The Music of your life' on WHLI, 1100 on
the dial."
And it was!
And it is!
We grew,up listening to that music. Elvis and the
Beatles just weren't welcome in our lives. But we grew
up listening to WNEW, the big city station. And now we
felt like traitors. But the issue was clear. It has to be
the Island's WHLI, unless the Big W changes back. But
can it? Should it? After all, WHLI had the courage to
forge ahead with the past. Will other stations follow?
WNYG, another Long Island station out of Babylon is
hinting at change. We will know by the time The. Trib is
printed if they have gone over.
But somehow it doesn't seem right for WNEW to
return to yesterday. Martin Block is gone. The crystal
chandelier (it actually existed) in the Make Believe
Ballroom is gone. Only William B. remains, and he
can't hear "The Music of your life." He lives in New
Jersey.
Well, to be honest, it's not a total separation. WHLI's
signal is only strong in Nassau and part of Suffolk. As
her signal fades, we turn the dial just a twitch to the
right and hear William B., again. And he doesn't know
what he's missing.

Old Name) Is Coming

donated funds for the globe to serve as a reminder of his many years of devotion to the Bethpage
community and especially, the Bethpage Public Library. Looking on with Mrs. Washburn are, 1. tor.,
Friends of the Library President, Leo Scbottland and Library Trustees Peggy Lang and Dr. Joseph
