Our New Horned
Consider It Yours
The BETHPAGE TRIBUNE has a new home, though it
is one of the oldest buildings in Bethpage. It is also one
of the most historic. 297 Broadway houses Bi County-mailing,
CLM Graphics, and now, The BETHPAGE
TRIBUNE. The building, which is an entire block long
is over fifty years old and at one time the building
welcomed virtually every single resident of Bethpage.
For through its doors the people came to borrow books
(Up until the early fifties 297 Broadway was Beth-page's
Library) or enjoy an egg cream in Ruby's
Sweete Shoppe at the south end of the building.
The Library moved in the early fifties and the Sugar
Bowl came into being. Rather than compete, Ruby
retired and moved.away. Bethpage mourned the
passing of the perfect egg cream.
Soon new businesses opened on the other side of the
tracks. W & L's and Uncle Bob's ate into the profits of
the Sugar Bowl and it gave way to a ballet school. A
Karate school came next and finally Bi-County
Mailing, the building's present tenant. But in the
center of the building, one business stood steadfast and
still stands. "The Sanitary Barbershop" has been at
the same stand for 52 years.
No longer is the barber pole outside the establishment.
They now have a synthetic plastic replica which
can never have the charm of the original, but such is
modernism and sidewalk law. The barbershop was first
opened by Frank Procida. His sons Cas and Al are the
resident barbers now, the second and last generation of
Procidas to run the oldest business in Bethpage.
So the TRIB is proud to be on this block, just south of
the railroad station and we hope to present in future
issues, not only the flavor of Bethpage as it is now, but
also, how it was a time ago, and who helped shape the
town.
If you have news for the TRIB, we will be happy to
see you. We're open weekdays 9 - 5. So stop in. Maybe
you'll feel some of the history the building exudes.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER AREAS?
We're not forgetting Island Trees, Old Bethpage,
'Plainedge, Plainview and Seaford. In future weeks we
will be setting up drop-off points for news. For now,
please send your news to the TRIE'S office in Beth-
' page.
...JUST GET MY NAME WRIGHT (SIC)
Occasionally we are going to misspell a name. We
will try not to do it, but you know it is going to happen.
We misspelled a name last week but no one complained.
Maybe because the name we misspelled was
that of our Publisher, Frank Morrone. We misspelled
his name-in the masthead. But then who reads the
masthead anyway. Leo Shottland, you should look in
the masthead this week.
A CONTEST JUST FOR YOU
The TRIB will be starting a new contest soon and it
could be just for you. We will talk about this next week.
In the meantime we would like to hear from you. What
do you want to see in this paper. Remember it is your
paper and we are at your beck and call.
Drop us a line#.
