Edward M. Schottland Assumes
Administrative Post At Kosair Hospital
Edward M Schottland
Chief Executive Off icer
On February 5, 1979 Edward
Schottland assumed the newly
created position of Chief
Executive Officer at Kosair
Hospital. He had been selected by
the Kosair Charities Committee
from a large field of candidates
narrowed - with the help of a
national consulting firm - to five
of the most qualified applicants
in the country. He comes to
Kosair from Mercy Hospital in
Rockville Centre in New York to
assume responsibility for all
aspects of Kosair Hospital's
administration.
Since his arrival Mr. Schottland
has been busy acquainting
himself with every square inch of
the hospital. He has been up
elevator shafts and in most
corners of the attic.
He has also been getting to
know with whom he will be
working. He has had meetings
with each department head and
with key people in the community.
His is a rigorous
orientation program.
Background
Ed Schottland's impressive
background includes a Master of
Professional Studies in Hospital
and Health Services
Administration from Cornell
University where he attended the
Sloan Institute of Hospital
Administration. This Institute is
within Cornell's graduate school
of business and public administration,
one of the first
business schools to sponsor a
program in hospital administration.
After receiving his degree, he
became Assistant Administrator
at Mercy Hospital in Rockville
Centre, New York. He soon added
the title of Director of Planning
and assumed total responsibility
for the planning and construction
of a $10.2 million building
program.
As part of his administrative
duties, he developed - with the
Director of * Pediatrics - a
program for progressive levels of
newborn care and instituted a
number of innovations to increase
the efficient operation of
the hospital.
Philosophy
Ed Schottland believes that a
hospital must be run like a
business because it is a business
as well as a service organization.
In our economic environment we
must allocate scarce resources to
provide the most services for the
money.
He was drawn to Kosair
Hospital because of the challenge
he feels and the potential he sees.
He was impressed also by the
Charities Committee's desire "to
provide excellent care to a
segment of the population often
forgotten."
New Louisvillians
Ed and Nancy Schottland are
still getting settled in Louisville.
Nancy is a nutritionist and plans
to resume her career the$p, or to
continue her education. Both are
avid sailors and are looking
forward to launching a boat on
the Ohio River this summer.
With Nurse Mar jorie Robards and patient.
Ed Schottland and Jeanne Seelbach, Director of Nursing, chat with
patient Barbara Duke.

Dog Obedience Classes
Now that summer's coming it
might be a good time to take
advantage of Bide-A-Wee Home
Association's dog obedience
courses, which are held on an
ongoing basis at both its Long
Island locations.
The seven-week course costs
$40.00 and covers complete on-leash
obedience training, as well
as solutions to various canine
behavior problems. Classes meet
once a week and are limited in
size to allow maximum personalized
attention.
In Wantagh the classes are
conducted by the training staff of
The Particular Pet, and in
Westhampton by Kilcommons
Professional Dog Training Ltd.
To register, and for further
information, call 516 / 427-7328
(Wantagh) or 516/325-0200
(Westhampton).
Bide-A-Wee, a non-profit
animal welfare organization
whose main function is to find
new homes for dogs and cats that
can no longer be kept by their
owners, also maintains
veterinary clinics - open to the
public on an appointment basis ~
and pet memorial parks.
Oftentimes pets are given up to
shelters simply because the
owners don't know how to
properly train and handle them.
These obedience classes have
been very instrumental in
preventing such situations and
keeping dogs with their original
owners.
Bide-A-Wee is at 3300 Beltagh
Avenue in Wantagh and on Old
Country Road in Westhampton.
