Young Robbery Victim Slain
Young Tom Moran of 82 Martin
Road North was shot in the back
and killed Wednesday night, the
victim of an apparent gas station
robbery.
Moran, 16, was found lying on
the office floor of D.J.'s Auto
Repair Station, South Far-mingdale,
at 7:45 PM. An ambulance
rushed him to Mid-Island
Hospital, but he was declared
dead on arrival, at 8:10 PM.
According to neighbors, Moran
had dropped out of school to help
support his mother, grandmother,
and younger brothers
and sisters, aged 6 to 13. His
death was an added blow to the
family, for one of the Moran girls
was in the hospital, reportedly
suffering from a kidney ailment,
at the time her brother was shot..
Although residents of MarjHfn
Road for less than a year, the
Morans-and young Tom,
especially-had made a positive
impact on their community. "He
seemed like a very good-hearted
boy" said Sylvia My oner of 86
Martin Rd. She was especially
touched by his concern for dogs.
When his dalmatioh had puppies,
Mrs. My ones recounted he went
around the neighborhood trying
to find a home for them.
"He seemed a lot older than his
age", she added. Moran had
shown his maturity this past
summer, noted another neighbor,
when he tried to start his own
gardening business. That effort
failed, and he went to work as a
gas station attendant.

contracts totaling over $7
million for advanced space
technology have been awarded to
Grumman Aerospace Corporation,
according to an announcement
today by George M.
Skurla, Chairman and President
of the company.
The largest contract is worth
$6.8 million and is for development
of software for a ground-based
satellite attack warning
system for the Space and Missile
System Organization (SAMSO) of
the U.S. Air Force in Los
Angeles.
The other two agreements,
totaling $280,000 and involving
the development of techniques
for manufacturing and assembling
large structures in space.
are with the National
Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) Manned
Spacecraft Center, Houston,
Texas, and the NASA Marshall
Space Flight Center in Hunt-sville,
Alabama.
"These contracts," said Skurla
in announcing the awards, "have
a significance far surpassing
their initial dollar value. They
are the basic building blocks
required for the next generation
of space systems we expect to see
operating in the nineteen-eighties.
"I am pleased," he continued,
"to see our nation using the
highly skilled engineers and
technicians at Grumman
Aerospace in its continuing efforts
to maintain our superiority
in space."

Set For March
To kick off his re-election
campaign, State Senator Owen
Johnson's (R-West Babylon)
friends and supporters will be
holding a Testimonial Dinner-
Dance on Thursday, March 11.
The fund-raiser event, being held
at the Naragansett Inn, Montauk
Highway, Lindenhurst, came out
spontaneously as an outgrowth of
Senator Johnson's Legislative
Advisory Committee.
According to Dinner-Dance'
Chairman Carl P. Maltese, a Dix
Hills attorney: "Many people in
the 4th District advisory group
have witnessed first-hand the
hard work, initiative, and effort
Senator Johnson puts in at the
State Capitol and in his communities.
It's imcumbent upon us
to aid his re-election."
Dinner-Dance Co-Chairman
John J. Kelly of Farmingdale
reports that the ticket response
so far has been excellent. "Over
500 people will be out for this
event," Kelly said. "We Want
Owen Johnson to begin his reelection
with a big boost from us.
Everyone is encouraged to attend."
Owen Johnson was first elected
to the State Senate in 1972
representing the 4th District
which takes in parts of the Towns
of Oyster Bay, Huntington, and

Marino Bill Aids Retarded
A bill clearing the way to
permit the New York State
Association for Retarded
Children to obtain mortgage
financing for residential care of
children and adults enrolled in
their program was passed by its
Senate sponsor, State Senator
Ralph J. Marino (R-Syosset).
The measure co-sponsored in
the Assembly by Assemblyman
Joseph M. Margiotta, (R-Uniondale)
includes the
Association among scores of
other non-profit education,
medical and cultural agencies
eligible to apply for state construction
financing. The measure
permits the State Dormitory
Authority to fund construction of
residences for the mentally
retarded on land not owned by
ARC.
The Nassau County Chapter of
ARC and Nassau County had
agreed to utilize a 10 acre tract
for hostels at Mitchel Field.
Plans were temporarily thwarted
because the project does not
qualify for Housing Finance
Agency funds since HFA requires
the builder to have ownership of
the land. ^_
porations, Authorities & Utilities
Committee, Commerce Committee,
Transportation Committee,
and Court Reform
Committee. Over the years, he
has been instrumental in passing
many laws affecting residents
throughout New York State.
The Dormitory Authority,
however, can provide mortgages
on leased land. Contractual
arrangements with the authority
will require that it retain
ownership of all completed
buildings and lease them to ARC
until construction bonds are paid
off. Nassau County will retain
ownership of the land and lease it
to ARC on a long-term basis.
Said Marino, "Residential
housing for the retarded is the
best alternative to those huge,
obsolete institutions that have
figured centrally in scandals of
neglect and abuse.
"ARC does an admirable job
caring for and training the
retarded. Their willingness to
undertake a hostel program at
Mitchel Field offers a desirable
alternative to community-based
locations which are often hard to
find and opposed by nearby
residents. I see this approach a
laudable solution to the major
problems we face in attempting
to provide care and services to
the mentally retarded."
Marino and Margiotta are
pushing for the bill's passage in
the Assembly and eventual approval
by the Governor despite
the current freeze on state
construction and the difficult
bond market. "I want to see that
ARC is guaranteed eligibility for
funding towards the time the
construction picture eases," said
Marino.
