So Much Love to Be Thankful For 70 Years Together
Claire and Edward Skellington celebrated 70 years together.
It is certainly true that this time of
year so many of us take time to reflect
on all the things we need to truly be
thankful for. Happiness, health, family
and so many other blessings are the
things that very often we take for
granted. Well, I can tell you first hand
that the Skcllington's don't take any of
it for granted.
Claire and Ed Skellington are life
long residents of Bethpage and have-lived
in their home together since they
built it in 1946. They met when they
were teenagers and it seemed like it
was love at first sight. " She was so
beautiful and she had a great figure, I
knew she was for me," said Ed with a
grin. And Claire seemed to feel the
same way. " Ed was older than me and
I was so impressed that he took the
time to talk to me and pay attention to
me. He was very handsome and sweet"
stated Claire.
And so... the courtship began and the
two eloped and were married in
Connecticut. " My mom wasn't too
happy we eloped but she knew we
would stay together." Claire stated.
The couple had two children Jean and
Edward, although sadly Edward passed
away at 17 years of age due to hepati-tis.
They also have four grandchil-dren
which they adore.
From 1937- 1939 Ed was a
Golden Glove Boxing Champion
and was an avid skier, bowler and
hunter. Ed served in 3 major battles
in WWII in Germany and received
the Bronze Star Medal in 1967. He
had a 31 year career with the
Bethpage Water District and served
as Superintendent. He also was a
member of the Bethpage Fire
Department for over 20 years
Claire worked for the Bethpage
Post Office for 35 years and was
third in charge. She decided to fin-ish
her education to pursue a career
in teaching and to her credit she
became a teacher at St. James and
St. Martin of Tours parochial
schools. At 86 years young, Claire
still takes care of her home which
is absolutely beautiful and is filled
with memories of their wonderful
life together. She also told us she
likes to keep informed and loves to
watch the local news.
The happy couple arc certainly
animal lovers as they owned a
horse called Moonshadow and now
own a gentle dog named Nakita,
A Community Comes Together to
Feed Those in Need
On November 13, the Bethpage Federal Credit Union, in partnership with
Cablevision, National Grid, Long Island Radio Group and NY Islanders,
gathered in Bethpage for a Turkey & Trimmings drive to benefit Island
Harvest. Hundreds of Long Island residents and volunteers came out to
assist in the collection of over 4,000 turkeys and 5,000 pounds of food — a
record number of donations, which will be provided to Long Island's many
families in need in time for Thanksgiving. Pictured ( center, I to r): Randi
Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest and Linda Armyn, Vice
President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, along with volunteers from the
C. W. Post Football Team and Bethpage.
