Wei coming F lainec ge Stuc ents to a ^ ew Year in New" Buili dings
Plainedge Middle School Principal Anthony DeRiso welcomed the build-ing's
new sixth graders during a summer orientation program held in
August.
For some students, the transition between school buildings can stir
up a mix of emotions. The uncertainty as to t h e location of their class-rooms,
where their lockers are, and how many minutes they have between
classes can make even the most confident student a bit apprehensive for
the first day of school. In an effort to put any start of school j i t t e i s to rest,
Plainedge Middle and Plainedge High Schools hosted new student orienta-tion
programs at the end of August.
Plainedge Middle School Principal Anthony DeRiso welcomed the
b u i l d i n g ' s incoming sixth- grade class by saying " there is no need to be
nervous, we are all in this together," making reference to this being his
first year as Plainedge Middle School's principal.
During the middle school program, Mr. DeRiso explained how to
log onto the d i s t r i c t ' s network and briefly went over the class and bell
schedules, explained what type of calculators the students would need, and
introduced the students to the b u i l d i n g ' s assistant principal, sixth- grade
administrative assistant, guidance counselors, as well as the K- 12 director
of music and fine arts. Finally, b e f o r e concluding the p r o g r am and inviting
the students to tour the building and try opening their lockers for the first
time, three older students shared their sixth- grade experiences.
Plainedge High School welcomed the graduating Class of 2013
during freshman orientation held at the school. T h e students participated
in. a character education p r o g r am facilitated by Plainedge graduate, moti-vational
speaker, and retired police o f f i c e r Paul Failla. The students were
broken into groups, each of which was led by an upper- class student, and
embarked on walking tours of the building. The exciting day ended with a
hincheon in the student cafeteria.. Photos provided by Syntax
