BHS Guitar Heroes Support
Challenge Day Program
Bethpage High School recently held a Guitar Hero tournament as a
fundraiser to help support Challenge Day. Challenge Day is a non- profit
organization that works to provide youth and their communities with love
and connection through workshops and programs that convey diversity,
truth, and full expression. This will be the High School's first year holding
the program. The Guitar Hero event was $ 5 to enter, and winners earned gift
certificates to Dunkin Donuts and Pappardelles Pizza.

Middle Schoolers Mind their Manners
As one of the first 21 ^^ Century Learning experiences for JFK
Middle School students in Bethpage, Mrs. Toni Cennamo led an etiquette
workshop to prepare students for a tea room outing that took place the fol-lowing
week. Mrs. Cennamo reviewed proper conversation and introduction
tactics, table manners, and more during an afternoon lesson.
Mrs. Cennamo explained the importance of empathy in social situa-tions,
and how individuals can make an effort to put themselves in others'
positions, engage them in conversation, and avoid leaving people out.
One area of significant focus was restaurant and table manners.
Mrs. Cennamo advised students to compliment their host/ hostess, fold nap-kins
and replace them on the table once the entire party finished dining, and
specific to the gentlemen, pull out ladies' chairs before sitting and again
before leaving as pictured above. .
The Century Scholars program is designed to develop students'
skills in areas such as communication, information technology, health and
fitness, financial and business literacy, and global and career awareness. As
a result, students become good citizens, critical thinkers and problem
solvers. Photo: Karina Stabile, Syntax Communication
BHS Students Take New'Steps'
A Cha Cha Dancing Experience
Ms. Novelli demonstrates a dance step while student participants follow.
As part of the 21^^ Century Learning initiative, Bethpage High School
held a Cha Cha Dancing lesson for students interested in learning some fun and
entertaining dance basics. During the after- school session, dancing enthusiasts
Mr. Stephen Franzke, a Physical Education teacher; and Ms. Jeanna Novelli, a
Science teacher and coach for the Bethpage High School Golden Girls Kickline
Team; demonstrated various aspects of dance moves that the students were able
to try out for themselves.
While Ms. Novelli has a background in dance, Mr. Franzke's enjoyment
of the activity started last year when he organized and participated in the High
School's " Dancing with the Teachers" fundraiser that paired staff members with
professionals from Arthur Murray Ballroom Dance Studios. He continued to
take dance lessons after the event's success, and even decided to incorporate
dance into the physical education curriculum. As a result, Bethpage High School
will offer a dance class in September that over 100 students have already signed
up for. Photos: Karina Stabile, Syntax Communication
