Challenge Day Comes to BHS
For the first time, Bethpage High School students participated in a Challenge
Day program facilitated by the non- profit Challenge Day organization that pro-vides
youth with workshops demonstrating the possibility of love and connec-tion
through the celebration of diversity, truth, and full expression. The event
was held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at Bethpage
Community Park, and was an experience that no one will ever forget.
Joined by staff members, parents, and Challenge Day/ Be the Change repre-sentatives
Chris Foster and Angela Aguilar, students spent the entire day
exploring their feelings and connecting with each other. Barriers were broken
down, emotions were let go and a change took place for everyone who partici-pated.
Group activities in which attendees shared their thoughts with one
another as well as games and and even a dance contest were all part of the days
events. Everyone was provided with special Challenge Day cards in which
they wrote messages to the individuals of their choice and expressed their
feelings. It was a wonderful day that demonstrated acceptance, positive rela-tionships,
self- expression, and more. It was an unbelievable experience that
createa lasting bonds and a greater respect for one another. Challenge Day was
made possible for Bethpage High School students thanks to several fiindrais-ing
efforts, including a Guitar Hero Contest, Dunk Tank Day, various bake
sales and donations from generous merchants and corporations. Special thanks
to school social worker Christine Kennedy and guidance counselor James
Benjamin, as well as the entire Challenge Day Committee for all their hard
work and effort in bringing this wonderful workshop to BHS.
