Bethpage Baseball Association Opening Day:
A Salute to Eileen Murphy
On Saturday April 4th all of the
teams, players, coaches, and fans of
Bethpage Baseball Association came
out on a cold and clammy day to help
kick off the start of the 2009 season.
They also were paying tribute to
Eileen Murphy, a woman who dedi-cated
38 years of service to the com-munity
and to the children of
Bethpage.
The day was a huge success and
everyone who came had a great time.
The activities commenced with the
introduction of Honored guests
Representative Peter King, County
Legislator Ed Mangano, State Senator
Kemp Hannon, Town Councilwoman
Rose Walker, State Assemblyman Rob
Walker, TownCouncilman Joe Pinto,
School Superintendent Richard Marsh
and Honoree Eileen Murphy.
Representative King presented Eileen
with flowers, a Bethpage Baseball T-shirt,
and a commemorative plaque
honoring Eileen for all her years of
service.
After a brief performance by the
Bethpage High School JV Kickline
team and Kelly Ryan's inspirational
rendition of the National Anthem,
Representative King threw out the fist
pitch to catcher Nick Marino to offi-cially
start the 2009 season.
Thanks to the help of 50 volun-teers
who showed up early to get the
fields in playable condition 5 games
were played during the course of the
day. In the early games, Charlie
Marino's 13u tournament team won 6-
4 over a tough team from Commack;
Frank Siblanos' White Sox defeated
Tom Galgano's Athletics 3- 0; Paul
Bitetti's Thunder defeated Rob
Aheam's Heat 12- 7. The afternoon
games were kicked off by Ryan
Selock singing of the National
Anthem followed by Jose Polit's
Royals 7- 0 victory over Brian
McGowan's Blue Jays and Dennis
Schnabel's Thunder's 10- 5 win over
Bobby Fehrenbach's Racers.
Regardless of the scores and the out-come
of the games, it was great to see
a community come together to cele-brate
the start of our baseball and
S o f t b a l l season and to pay homage to
a woman who dedicated the better
part of her life to it and its residents.
