REMINDING ME TO VOTE?
Are you up to date on your status? Have you commented on your
friend's wall? Have you voted in the election?
With voter turnout on an upward climb, at least in presidential elections, it seems that younger
voters are taking greater notice of the importance of politics in their lives, and turning to the polls
to voice their opinions. However, there are still many young adults and ehgible voters who decide
not to vote on Election Day. This issue affects the final results of every election, no matter if it's
a primary election or a mid-term election like we had this November. This year, it seems the sub-ject
of voter participation and voter turnout has influenced websites such as Facebook, the social
networking giant, to create and house new applications that not only encourage users to vote, but
actually remind them to do so. r 1

Facebook, the world's largest and most popular social website, has been growing in size since it first opened its virtual doors in 2005. The small
site initially formed for Harvard students now boasts more than 500 million users around the world, ranging from high school students and
college graduates, to CEOs of companies and hotdog stand salesmen, to your grandmother and her bingo friends. Statistics posted in Facebook's
Press Room say that in 2010, approximately 250 million people, roughly half of Facebook's total 500 million user population, visited the site on
a daily basis. These numbers are quite impressive, especially when compared to last year's statistics (cited in an article from the Tech Crunch
website) that show Facebook's user population as being less than half its current size, a grand total of only 150 million users. continued on page 7
