COLLEGE OF: TECHfiCRSSt
FARRflNGOALE, NY-SI^QT Love on CampuSf^^^/^^^^ Winter Commencement
By Bridget Erlikh
Cold winter, wind, and ice draw us
indoors, and the holidays encourage
intimate relationships. This is the season
for human warmth, for love.
However, with Valentine's Day having
come and gone, some think it's better to
be alone.
"I've always had depressing
Valentine's Days," said Dina Manaa,
a sophomore. "Not that I don't benefit
from relationships - I'm in one now - but
I'd rather be single, because you can get
so easily distracted. The thing to do is to
get schoolwork done first."
Distraction is a major concern for many
students before getting involved, and
with good reason. A recent graduate, who
goes by the name Swave, fathered a child
2 years ago while living on campus. "It's
been rough; if you let them, relationships
will affect you."
It's difficult enough to get good grades
and maybe hold down a job, or help out
at home, without strains created by the
ups and downs of relationships.

January 25,2008, marked Farmingdale
State College's (FSC) Fifth Winter
Commencement Ceremony.
The Winter Commencement
FSC 2008 Winter Graduates
Ceremony allows FSC to "recognize the
students graduating during the fall/winter
semester," said Dr. Louise Napolitano-
Carmen, "while welcoming graduates
and their guests to the ceremony."
Nearly 550 students in majors
ranging from ornamental horticulture
to Technology Studies completed their
Dominican Republic Students Come to FSC
course work and qualified for graduation
this winter.
The graduates proudly celebrated their
accomplishments with friends, family,
and fellow classmates.
The Annual Winter
Commencement
Ceremony allows
FSC to celebrate and
acknowledge the hard
work of their students.
Corrine Vinberg,
a senior at FSC,
sat among friends
while waiting to see
friend and former
classmate Genevieve
Farag graduate with a
degree in Management
Technology.
Vinberg watched
with pleasure as her
friend received her diploma. Vinberg's
own graduation date is not that far off;
she is scheduled to graduate in May.
After graduation she hopes to find a job
in sales and put her degree to use.
Excitement, anxiety, and
eagerness filled the gym in Nold Hall.
Graduates lined the stage on either side
while the rest of the gym filled with
guests. As keynote speaker Congressman
Steve Israel delivered his speech, listeners
learned that tuition in New York State
was up 37 percent and may continue to
rise.
Israel quoted former President John
F. Kennedy when he said, "[They do it]
not because it is easy, but because it is
hard." He encouraged the graduates and
future graduates to continue to work hard
because he has found that although life
can be difficult hard work is worth it.
Concluding the ceremony, FSC
President Hubert Keen explained to
the graduates that now as alumni to
Farmingdale State College they, "always
belong to this college, as this college
always belongs to you."
