THE RAMBLER. EAKMINGDAIX STATE COLLEGE STUDENT NEWSPAPEK • VOLUME 79, NO 7 OCTOB^U 2008
D o r m Di s a r r ay
Students are unhappy with the dorms
which look like they are falling aprart.
'The dripping of the leaking faucet
wakes me up in the middle of the
night. I don't know why it's taking
so long to get fixed," said Malika
Isom, third year resident student.
Farmingdale is known for its many
commuter students, but all the way
on the other side of the campus is
the world of the resident students
Four dorms were built in the 1970^s,?'
three of which are no longer used to"
house students;" one, Dewey Hall, is
still in use. Just across from these older
buildings is the luxurious Orchard Hall.
Although Orchard is a new
building, students have been filing
endless complaints about leaking
faucets and bathrooms flooding due
to improperly installed showers.
Althoughtheminorissuescanbeeasily
fixed with some paint or a patch, they
have taken weeks, even months, to fix.

to get the light replaced in her suite's
bathroom. "Our RA had to put one of
Dorm Disarrayher lamps in the
bathroom because there was no other
light in there." Students in Dewey
Hall have been "using pots and pans
to catch water from a leaking roof
when it rains, said Inter-dormitory
Council (IDC) president David Brown.
The Director of Campus Housing,
Carol Balewski, said the physical
plant handles all the repairs on campus
through a computerized system, where
all the work is categorized by what
kind of repair is needed, whether it
is plumbing or electrical, and so on.
"Dormitory Income Fund
Reimbursement committee chairperson
promised us a roof (for Dewey Hall).
Where's our roof?" said Balewski.
Students are frustrated with the
delays. "Repairs to Orchard and
Dewey Halls must not be a priority,"
said a second year resident student.
"I'm paying to be comfortable here.
It should be fixed when I move in."
Students continue wait to get repairs
in their rooms and Dewey students
are still dealing with the leaking roof \
There's Ability in Dis-Ability By Erin Snyder
On the Farmingdale campus there
are approximately 300 identified
individuals who require some kind of
special accommodation. "This school
needs more automatic
doors, and elevators that
can be relied on to work,"
said Scott Andreala, a FSC
student who gets around
campus in a wheelchair.
Andreala certainly
knows what could use
improvement. He made a
movie a year and half ago
documenting the problems on campus
with handicapped accessibility. He
showed the movie to the governance
board, and while they were sympathetic
to his plight, they said there wasn't
much they could do about it.
College campuses are mandated
by law to provide reasonable
accommodations for all students with
a disability whether it is physical or
not. "To be honest with you, I never
really noticed the extent of access for
handicapped students on campus," said
Sam Chohan, 21, an FSC student. The
two laws that protect
studentswithdisabilities
are the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973 and
the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990.
Many buildings on
campus do not have
elevator access to the
second floor, including
Memorial and Knapp Halls. Students
who are physically handicapped do not
have access to many faculty offices,
the Writing Center, and certain classes.
"To meet with faculty whose
offices are on the second floor of
these buildings ' have to call and
make other arrangements," said
Andreala. The buildings that do have
elevators were installed decades ago.
Local officials have secured
$750,000 for the 2008-2009 school
budget to enhance accessibility
on campus for the disabled.
Director Office of Support Services
for Students with Disabilities, Malka
Edelman has been in her position
since 1985 and only seen one
complaint filed against the college.
