Students Roll Up Their
Sleeves For Blood Drive
By Gregory Patriss
Everyone gets caught up each year in
choosing a costume to wear, but being a
hero is a good idea for Halloween.
Being a hero isn't scary, and in fact,
each donor can help up to four people
with a donation of a single pint of blood.
Instead of giving chocolate and cavities
to young children, help the Long Island
Blood Services save lives.
The annual blood drive took place on
Halloween in Roosevelt Hall. "You're tak-ing
only one hour out of your busy, lucky,
healthy life, and you are doing something
that could literally save the life of one
of your friends, relatives, or neighbors,"
said Kathryn Burke, FSC student.
The blood drive was littered with peo-ple
like a city street. Goodies and treats
were available to those who survived
the leaching. Surprisingly the environ-ment
was friendly; quite a few smiles and
laughter pierced through the crowd.
"Acute blood shortages are a problem,
and that's why the Long Island Blood
Service has to come to the schools," said
Sandy Lori-Snyder, director of Student
Activities.
The goal for each blood drive is to get
as many donations as possible. Last year
Farmingdale had a record breaking drive
with 130 donations.
"After the very first time I donated, I
remember thinking, that was so easy, why
I haven't I done this before?"said Burke.

Women's Soccer - Rams Capture First SItyline
Championship and Advance to the NCAA Tournament
Farmingdale State College !s Women's Soccer team
captured it's first Skyline Conference Championship.
Women's Soccer Wins
Skyline Championship
By Lauren Mason
The Women's Soccer team is one of
the best in years, and they proved it by
winning the Skyline Conference Cham-pionship.
The team is led by Coach Chris
Roche and assistant coach Frederich
Pavey. They were selected as preseason
favorites to win their conference. With
such high expectations the girls worked
hard and proved they had what it takes.
Since Coach Roche has come from
Briarcliffe College, and taken over Farm-ingdale's
soccer program has seen huge
improvement.
Coach Roche has changed that and
has big goals for the future of the soccer
program. He would eventually like to be-come
a top 50 program that plays teams
from all over the world. Last year's sea-son
they won 10 games, which was the
most victories they've had in six years,
since entering NCAA Division III. "The
expectations are to win at least ten games
in the season, get to the Skyline Finals,
and get to the NCAA tournament," said
Coach Roche. (continued on page H)
FSC Awarded First-Ever
NIH Grant for
Biological Research
By Bridget Erlikh
The Farmingdale State College De-partment
of Biology received its first Na-tional
Institute of Health Grant this sum-mer.
Dr. Frances Santiago-Schwarz, a
biology professor at FSC, wrote the pro-posal
that won the grant of $208,000, af-ter
one prior attempt. "It's a very arduous
process," said Dr. Santiago-Schwarz.
"Getting the first grant is the hard-est,"
said Dr. Adair, Chair of the Biology
Department. "The college doesn't have a
long history of getting federal grants, es-pecially
for research." Adair said this will
improve opportunities for other faculty
and show that the college can support this
kind of grant and increase the credibility
of the school.
The NIH grant for Basic Science Re-search
will support a three year research
study into the function of very specialized
immune-system cells in human blood,
called dendritic cells. The goal of the re-search
is to prove and analyze the func-tion
of these cells in rheumatoid arthritis
