SUNY VOTE
FOR REFORM
ALBANY, NY - - On January
10,1995, Diego Munoz,
President of the Student
Assembly and Member of the
Board of Trustees voted for
qualified reform measures to
save SUNY $4.1 million in FY
1996-97.
"The final version of the
resolution, as I understand it,
provides for adjustments to the
final number and specific line
items. The package constitutes
savings from proposals that
were targeted in ReThinking
SUNY. I have qualified support
for the package as I seriously
disagree with the financing of
SUNYCAP and the leveraging
of any potential tuition
increase."
Munoz continued by
saying, "My qualified vote is
meant to send a clear message
to state officials that I am
willing, in full faith, to negotiate
under certain terms and not
simply a token vote. Should my
position be undermined or
misrepresented, then the deal
is off."
Munoz has addressed
his concerns with SUNYCAP
(or the Minnesota Plan) and
tuition increases at numerous
trustee meetings and plans to
review alternatives to each.
"Given the opportunity, I am
willing to be part of the solution,
otherwise I and the students of
SUNY will have to act
accordingly to make our voices
heard."

AIDS: THE DEADLY KILLER
AIDS has been part of our
lives for many years.- It's helped to
shape the whole way we think about
sex. Since the first cases were
Identified in 1981, more than
315,000 Americans have devetoped
AIDS and over 194,000 have died.
The numbers continue to grow -1
million people in the United States
are infected with HIV, the virus that
causes AIDS - while the prospects
for a cure or vaccine seem no
closer.
AIDS stands for Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is
a condition caused by a virus known
as the human immunodeficiency
virus, or HIV. The virus attacks your
immune system, making it so weak
that you come down with diseases
that you wouWn't normally get.
A person can be infected
with HIV for many years before
developing diseases. When you
develop certain diseases, such as
certain types of cancer and
pneumonia, you have full btown AIDS.
There are two main ways that you can
become infected with HIV:
You will not become
infected with HIV by:
- getting bit by a
misquito
- sitting on a toilet
seat
- sharing a soda
* by having sex with someone infected
with HIV
*by sharing needles with an infected
person
HIV also can be passed on
from infected mothers to their babies,
either during pregnancy or when
giving birth. Occasionally, the virus
has been passed to children through
breast feeding.
Some people have become
infected with HIV through btood
transfusions, but nrwst of those
cases occurred before the blood
supply was tested for HIV. It is now
very rare for someone to be infected
through a btood transfusion. HIV is
found in a persons btood, semen, or
vaginal flukJs. If you are having
sexual intercourse with someone
infected with HIV, the virus could
enter you bloodstream through cuts
in the vagina, penis, or rectum. The
cuts couW be so small that you
wouldn't even know you had them.
The virus can also enter the
cells that line the walls of the vagina.
So even if there are no sores in the
vagina, HIV can infect a woman. The
same is true for men. The virus can
enter a man's btoodstream through
