William J. Byrne
SUNY Farmingdale Administrator Dead at 61
William J. Byrne, 61, assistant to
SUNY Farmingdale President Frank A.
Cipriani, died yesterday,
apparently of a heart
attack, in his East
Northport home.
In addition to his
status as President
Cipriani's assistant,
Byrne was SUNY
F a r m i n g d a l e ' s
affirmative action officer
and government relations
liaison and served as vice
chairman of the
Huntington town
Republican committee
and as campaign manager
for Assemblyman John
Flanagan (R-East
Northport).
Flanagan said
yesterday, "He always
tried to keep things on an
even keel and always
tried to fmd the good
things in a person.
"He had a phrase,"
Flanagan recalled, "He
would lean back in his chair relaxing with
a smile and a big cigar and say of someone,
'He's good people.' That's what I would
say about Bill."
Byme was at a fund raiser for
Flanagan on Sunday and, according to
Steve Bemheim, SUNY Farmingdale's

director of communications, was at work
Monday and "left in his usual jovial way."
Byme joined the school's staff in 1966 as a
data processing manager.
"He was well liked, and his friendly
smile and guidance will be missed by all
the faculty and students," Bemheim said.
Byme was bom Sept.
11,1930, in Brooklyn and
received a bachelor's
degree in business
administration from St.
Francis College in
Brooklyn. He served in
the U.S. Army from 1953
to 1955 and did a tour of
duty in Korea.
Surviving are his wife,
Eleanor, a daughter,
Doreen Byme of East
Northport, and three
stepchildren. Donna
Sobieski, of Clarkesburg,
Md., Robert Sobieski, of
East Northport, and Amy
Sobieski of New York City.
Visiting will be at
Commack Abbey Inc., 96
Commack Rd., Commack,
on February 5 and 6 from 2
to 5 RM. and from 7 to 10
P.M. A funeral mass will
be said at 10 A.M. on
February 7 at St. Francis
of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in
Greenlawn. Burial will be at St. Patrick's
Cemetery in Huntington.
