Environmental Day
By Barry Asch and
Joe Puccio
On Thursday May 2,
Farmingdale held its second
annual Pride In Farmingdale day.
Participation was simple; all a
person had to do is go to the
information desk and tell them
you were interested. They then
gave the participant a T-shirt,
painters cap and a garbage bag .
Then all you had to do was go
around the campus and pick up
pieces of garbage. The partici-pants
from the Rambler found
rubbish ranging from a gum
wrapper and heinz ketchup packet
to a very large dead crow.
While walking around
campus with fellow staff mem-bers
Joe Puccio and Scott Rizzo,
we whitenessed only a couple of
other participants who were shar-ing
in the campus-wide clean-up.
Joe Puccio, Editor-in-Chief of
the Rambler, was quoted saying
"this years turnout for the Pride
In Farmingdale environmental
day was disappointing to say the
least".
It should be known that
it's not entirely the fault of the
students that the turnout was poor.
In all fairness, the originally
scheduled day (April 30) was
rained out and a new date was
scheduled for two days later. This
is only a small excuse however,
as both days were planned during
activity hour and all who could
have attended on Tuesday could
easily have gone on Thursday.
From knowledge of last year's Environmental
Day, it can honestly be said that the number of con-cemed
students who did not just take their t-shirts and
go home, has gone down drastically. Last year, the
clubs planned the event in depth, obtained equipment
from Jones Beach, had the Ml cooperation of the
ThAinctk LGolcoabl al
Physical Plant, and guest speakers. I'm not saying that
the clubs that organized the event did not care about it,
I'm just saying that people did not take partor seem to
be as involved.
On the upside, there were a number of stu-dents
who did care, were concerned, and took part. It
was a wonderftil sight to see
students giving some of their
time up to show others that
SUNY Farmingdale is a be-loved
college and not just a
stop off between high school
and a "real college."
Along with the comments
from people saying they were
disappointed in the turnout,
there was also some good re-ports
as well. When asked about
what he thought about the day
overall Scott Rizzo said "even
though it wasn't as big a turn-out
as last year, I am pleased
with the accomplishments of
the students". According to the
information center they said a
bag was turned in about every
45 minutes. That time was just
a little bit over last years 30
minutes. This statement is a bit
inaccurate as last year's collec-tion
was easily five times as
large as this years.
Rambler participants were
able to fill two bags of garbage
and when we went to throw
away our bags, there were at
least five more in that particu-lar
dumpster. It was obvious
however, that this number could
have been a lot higher if more
students took part in the event.
Hopefully next year's Pride In
Farmingdale day will have a
larger quantity of participants
than did this year's event.
To all of you who took part in
this years Environmental Day -
CONGRATULATIONS!
Without your help we could
not have made this day as much
of a success as it was.
This event was sponsored in part by Phi-
Theta-Kappa, the Sociology and Anthropology club
and CAB. Once again a big thanks goes out to all of
you who helped Farmingdale out on this day, YOU
DID GREAT!!!!
