Students Celebrate Multi-Cultural Day
SUNY Farmingdale has often been referred to as a
campus that has "nothing going on," "dead " "boring " and
in short, no spirit Nobody seems to know how Farmingdale
has received such an unfavorable reputation stuck to itself,
but it does. Most of the time this reputation clings true, but
not on the sixteenth of April, 1991. That day was different
than any other, here at Farmingdale.
That day was "Multi-Cultural Day." It was a day
of parades, festivities, and dancing. The event took place in
the back of Roosevelt Hall and also in the Multi-Purpose
Room. The back of Roosevelt Hall was where the main food
was served. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and eggplant parmesan
were the main choices and various drinks were available in
the multi-purpose room along with dessert All of the food
was fiee (to all students) and was prepared by the Marriot
Food Service. A few clubs had set up booths and gave out
food, too.
Free t-shirts were given out and WCTF (our be-loved
college radio station) was playing music. Mikata, a
contemporary African music band, was performing a live
show in the multi-purpose room. The show featured Car-ribean-
style music along with dancing. Many of the stu-dents
danced amongst themselves as well as doing the
limbo!
Students were playing volleyball, cricket (a sport
that is similar to stick-ball), and some were even throwing
frisbees around. Itseemed that everybody was just having
a great time on a beautiful day. No classes, no worries, just
a day for enjoyment
While participating at this joyous event, I took the
liberty of asking different people a few questions. I asked
Mario Geddes (president of WCTF), what he thought of the
event and he stated,"! had to deal with administration
screaming and students screaming - I wonder if it's worth
it - who cares as long as I have fun!" Indeed, fun is what
he had!
Michelle Kennedy (Rampage Editor & Resident
Birthday Girl), said,"It was great! This was one of the best
things done on campus and I had a lot of fun! I also thought
thatL.A.S.O. (Latin American Student Organization) rep-resented
their club well."
Alyssa Shasho (WCTF DJ) said,"It was pretty
cool... there could've been a little more excitement but it
was great how there was a lot involvement within the clubs.
The Cairibean music was cool, and the D.J.'s were excel-lent"
Our very own resident cake thrower was present
(Domingo) and he stated that the Multi-Cultural Parade was,
"pcetty good. It was fun - hanging out playing volleyball,
gorgeous day, and great music. Mikata was good, very
Cam bean."
I also had the honor and joy to speak with Bernardo
Munoz - co-chairperson and idea-man for the event - thought
that the parade "turned out excellent!"
He also stated that, "everything turned out just as
planned. It was difficult and a lot of work, but definitely
worth it It'll be even better next year. Hopefully, we will get
more clubs in the parade. These parades will teach people
about different eythnic groups and cultures."
A guest celebrity attended the parade, Bryant Lewis
from WMCA, he told our Sports Editor that he had a great
time and liked it a lot He also hopes to return next year.
Personally, I had an exuberant time at the parade.
When I think about what really brought the cultures together,
I think of the volleyball games that look place.
You may all think I'm crazy, but I have a reason.
Here was a very simple event taking place with people of
everv culture, teaming together, playing volleyball. The
teams were not "Blacks versus Whites" or "Asians versus
Latinos," they were mixed. People of different cultures
working and striving...together!!! What more can one ask?
I think it is the basics that can unite all the cultures together.
