Tragedy Amidst Victory
By Jeff Valfer and
the Office of Sports Information
On November 2, the women's soccer team de-feated
rival Nassau Community College in the semifinals to
go on to play Orange Community College for the Region
XV championship. Farmingdale beat Orange CC by a score
of 5-0 to become the Region XV champions.
The semifinal game against Nassau was a 4-0 win,
the most goals ever scored by the Rams against Nassau.
They outshot Nassau 16-1 with Kelly Doran scoring two,
fullback Toni Varacchi scoring one on a hard low shot from
twenty five yards out and Bridget Bemier leading off the
game at 5:45 of the first half with the eventual game-winner.
The final game matched the Rams against Orange,
whom they had beaten 6-0 a week ago. The Lady Rams
controlled the game and had eight shots on goal in the first
half before Stephanie Gaskell found Bridget Urso at the top
^ of the penalty area for a pass and the winning goal at the 41
minute mark. The team continued their onslaught in the
second half as Liz McDonough penetrated from her sweeper
position to score two goals at the 15 and 17 minute marks.
Halfback Karyn Ficalora scored on an assist from
McDonough at 22 minutes and the Lady Rams finished off
with Loretta DePaoli sccwing 41 minutes.
The women's team, led by captains Krissy Duffy
and Toni Varacchi at fullback shut down all their Regional
opponents in the playoffs to repeat as Regional Champions.
The stellar defense with sweeper Liz McDonough and
Carol Croan in the middle held their Regional opponents to
only two shots in two games and two shots in the five
Region games played. Goalkeeper Tracy Donnan, along
with the defenders, allowed only eight goals scored upon
them all year; the lowest number of goals allowed ever for
the Lady Rams.
All was not good news, though, as Shannon Sepe,
the team's leader and National Junior College Women's
Soccer Most Valuable Player for offensive play got injured
in the game against Nassau. Shannon was taken to a hospital
and was diagnosed as having fractured two veterbrae. Shan-non
was very upset and depressed that she couldn't partici-pate
in the playoffs with her team. It has been recognized,
however, that Shannon's dedication and motivation was one
of the main ingredients that got her team into the playoffs.
The women's soccer team winning their third
straight game and Shannon being named NJC M.V. P. for
offense has made Farmingdale College regonizable as one
of the best junior colleges for atheletics. The womens soc-cer
team has proven that in sports that talent isn't the only
thing that gets you to the top, but motivation, dedication and
teamwork are also very important factors.
The Rambler extends 'Get Weir wishes to
Shannon Sepe, and congratulations to the
entire women's soccer team on their
monumentous victory!
