On Friday, October 12th, 13th and 14th, about
30 student leaders from SUNY Farmingdale assembled
at the Greenkill YMCA in Huguenot, N.Y. to participate
in the 1990 leadership retreat We went as part of differ-ent
clubs and organizations and in the beginning, we
stayed in those groups. It was as if invisible barriers were
separating us. Then we participated in a series of leader-ship
workshops and team building exercises and through
these processes, welnet people from different back-

grounds, culnires and beliefs. We had to learn to trust each
other and to treat each other with respect in order to com-plete
the workshops successfully. We felt the walls of
prejudice and fear crumbling. We tasted unity and loved it.
We wanted to share the experience with the students of
Farmingdale and to make a difference by enlightening them
with the concepts of unity and respect. And some of us
carried through with our desires.
But then there came a test; the homecoming pag-eant.
Certain individuals that attended the leadership retreat
displayed the most rude and obnoxious behavior at the
pageant that I've ever seen. They showed that they didn't
learn a damn thing from the leadership retreat and it's a
shame that time, energy and resources were wasted on
such hypocritical people. When an individual humiliates
someone that gets up on a stage in front of hundreds of
people, that person does not deserve the privilege of
attending any extra-curricular activities.
Is this the way to achieve unity? Is this respect?
Farmingdale just took a giant step backwards and person-ally,
I'm disgusted.
I applaude those leaders who tried to set a good
example. There will be other opportunities.
