SGA Tells Students Where They Can Go!
By Steve Conley
On Monday, April 23, the Ram's Den Lounge
opened to the students of SUNY Farmingdale.
The Ram's Den, located in Roosevelt Hall, had
been closed for renovations in early 1989. Fifteen months
and 25 to 35 thousand dollars worth of improvements later,
the Ram's Den reopened.
The student body can be thanked for the new
changes. The Student Government Associations of SUNY
Farmingdale for both the 1988-89 and 1989-90 academic
years were financially responsible for the renovations.
Since the student government receives it's funds directly
from the mandatory student activity fee, which constitutes
60 dollars of student tuition, the students are indirectly
responsible for this new facility.
Renovations include: the removal of the bar, new
carpeting, all new furniture, a piano, a 45 inch color
television, and the facilities to add a music listening area at
a later date.
The Ram's Den was once the campus tavern and
a major part of the student's extra-curricula lives prior to its
closure in 1986. It's closure was the result of the altered
drinking age laws which increased the legal drinking age
from 19 to 21.
After the pub closed, it was refurbished as a
student lounge and was used for student gatherings and
meetings. The booths which once lined the den were
removed and some furniture was added. Mike Daniels,
then Director of Student Activities and the Advisor to
SGA, urged the student government to redo the facility to
make the most of the College Union Building. The 1989-
90 Executive Board led by President Jim Sullivan and
Vice-President Patrick Lugo created an ad-hoc committee
(a temporary committee designed to serve a specific pur-pose
and then disband) to arrange the renovations. Student
Senator Cathie Healy was appointed as chair-person of the
newly christened Ram's Den Committee.
The executive board of the 1989-90 SGA had
served their terms and a new student government took
office. The current president. Perry Brown, saw to the
completion and fruition of his predecessor's efforts. The
renovations were aided by surplus funds created by the new
athletic fee which, prior to it's inception, drew it's funds
from SGA.
The opening was organized by Alice Mathis, who
recently became the Director of Student Activities at
SUNY Farmingdale. In attendance were SUNY
Farmingdale College President, Frank Cipriani; Vice Presi-dent
For Student Affairs, Sam Taube; and Assistant Dean
for Student Life, Mike Daniels.
The Ram's Den lounge is located in Roosevelt
Hall directly opposite from the Student Government Of-fices
and will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. The den will be available for night use
upon request.
It is expected that by Fall, 1990, the Ram's Den
will be fully staffed and open for the same hours as the
building itself.
