What's Going On In Ward Hall?
By Joe Puccio
Rambler Staff Reporte
Ward Hall, Governance, The Farmingdale University club
and the Student Government Association (SGA)?
Four seemingly unrelated things. All however are
linked together and help serve a major function on campus
(Ward Hall itself excluded). Many people have, both now
and in the past, wondered what service(s) Ward Hall has
provided. Many more don't know that there is a Govern-ance
system, let alone what it does or how extremely
important it really is. As far as the Farmingdale University
Club, (sorry, it's not for students) it is about as well known
as Herb Washington (trust me he is a real person).
Ward Hall was originally a dormitory and then it
was changed into the hall for Nursing and a Dental Hygiene
clinic. Now after being closed entirely for a while. Ward
Hall is the home of the Governance office, the University
Club, the Programs in the Arts (responsible for the present
Vietnam program), and the newly formed Outcomes As-sessment.
To find out what the first two organizations are
and how they affect students, interviews were held with:
Margret Baglivio, (Supervisor of development, who pre-forms
numerous additional tasks to say the least), Nancy
Thomson (Vice-President of Academic Affairs), Dean
Rodriguez (Dean of Students), Mike Daniels (Student Life
Programs and Student Union), Professor Nelson (Physics
Department), and the chair-persons of the Twelve commit-tees
of Governance.
The Farmingdale University Club provides a
meeting place for all of its faculty and professional staff
members, to facilitate informal campus business, to
su-engthen the lines of communication among the faculty
and staff and more importantly, communicate with the
public on matters which affect education. The Farmingdale
University Club is located in the main lobby of Ward Hall
and many of its faculty/staff members are also involved in
Governance. Many times there are open meetings and
special speakers at the Farmingdale University club. The
problem is that many students don't know that there are
meetings, or worse, the students who do know just don't
want to participate. This is very sad because a student voice
can be heard but only if it is voiced and only if the student
has pride in his/her school enough to speak.
The Governance System of SUNY Farmingdale
is a large and complex unit but can be successfully detailed.
The Governance of our school is composed of twelve
standing committees which serve specific functions and
supply vital information to campus administration via the
Farmingdale Executive Committee (FEC).
The FEC, Chaired By Professor Michael Smiles,
is the overseer of the other Governance committees and as
such coordinates their efforts as well as seeing that vacan-cies
in committees are filled and supervising all nomina-tions
to committees. The FEC reviews the conduct of
committee members brought to their attention, that can

result in a committee member losing committee member-ship.
The FEC serves a vital purpose by making recom-mendations
on school policy and procedure as requested
by individual committee members, members of the profes-sional
staff, students, alumni, members of the College
Council, or by individual members of faculty.
The other committees of governance are: Admis-sions
and Academic standards, chaired by Prof. Loretta
Falk, Athletic committee, chaired by Prof. Virginia Sulli-van,
Budget, chaired by Prof. Theresa Branciforte, Calen-dar,
chaired by Prof. Linda Calderone, Continuing and
term appointment, chaired by Prof. Bernard Malara, Cur-riculum,
chaired by Prof. Lloyd Makarowitz, Elections,
chaired by Prof. Judith Tuthill, International Education,
chaired by Prof. Laurie Rozakis, Rules Committee, chaired
by Prof. Louis Perone, Student Activities, chaired by
Elizabeth SulHvan, and the Collegewide Promotions Com-mittee.
Each of these committees serves an important
purpose on the SUNY Farmingdale campus, (see Commit-tees
page ?)
The president of SGA, Perry Brown, has verbally
agreed to send copies of the SG A's m inutes to the FEC. The
FEC, with the help of its chair Michael Smiles, has also
agreed to send approved copies of their minutes to the
SGA. Through this action student opinion and ideas as well
as suggestions can be submitted to the Farmingdale Execu-
PHOTOBYBRIGIDJAIPAUL
live Committee (FEC). This committee is not only part of
governance but also an integral part of Administration
itself, acting as a messenger which supplies Administra-tion
with both information obtained firom all committees,
and also all suggestions about the campus brought to their
attention and approved.
It has been proposed in SGA that an amendment
to their constitution be made in order to create a new
committee whose sole purpose will be to improve commu-nications
between the students of SUNY Farmingdale and
its professors. Such a committee would be highly benefi-cial
to all people on campus and may ultimately lead to the
committees of Governance actually having some students
as members. If that were to happen the lines of communi-cation
would be complete and if nothing else, one re-porter's
dream will come true.
For now we as students can only hope for a beginning. The
SGA has proposed the committee and this newspaper will
continue to follow the progress of this proposal in the hopes
that this committee will be initiated with all due haste.
The committee can help the students, the sharing
of minutes between committees and SGA can help the
students but all this requires one thing; it requires the
students of SUNY Farmingdale to stand up and make their
voices be heard, all students must have pride in their school
and try to make it better, otherwise, no one will help the
students or their campus.
