We Don't Have The Right...
By Joe Puccio
Rambler Staff Writer
Certain people in authority here on the
Farmingdale campus may be behaving in a way
far below expected campus standards. This re-porter
interviewed one student who now believes
she has nowhere to turn should a grievance emerge
in any of her classes. Based upon an hour-long
interview with her, a conclusion has been reached
that faculty members may have severely mis-treated
this girl. If this is true action should be
taken or in the very least an apology be made.
The date of the occurrence in question
was November 27, the student who tried to make
a simple complaint was Frances Serrano, and the
two professors involved were English Prof. Vir-ginia
Sullivan and chair-person of the English
department, Prof. Janet Camesi.
Miss Serrano arrived at class (composi-tion
rhetoric) on time at approximately 1:55 pm.
She took her seat and waited as the classes
research papers were returned during the taking
of attendance. Miss Serrano received her paper
and returned to her seat. At this time prof. Sulli-van
requested that she remove her hat. Miss
Serrano politely stated that she would rather not,
(Miss Serrano was wearing a very dressy outfit
part of which consisted of a plain flat rimmed
solid black hat). Prof. Sullivan then stated that no
one was ever allowed to were a hat in here
classroom and that if Miss Serrano did not re-move
her hat she would have to leave the class.
Understandably, Miss Serrano did not wish to
take off her hat. Even if it was for no other reason
than the simple fact that if she took her hat off she
would have to put it on the floor and the chances
of it not picking up a pile of dirt by the end of class
were nil. Prof. Sullivan should have been willing
to forgive Frances's accidental shortcoming and
simply issue a warning stating that she would not
be allowed to wear a hat in the future, but instead
she refused to bend in any way and Frances had
to leave the class. (This part of Frances's account
has been verified by another student in her class.)
It was at this time that Frances decided to
make a complaint to find out why she should be
fbrced to take off a completely unobtrusive hat
without at least being given the allowance of
understanding for her one-time mistake. She
explained what had happened to an unidentified
auto mechanics professor who told her that this
action was a bit unfair and also that the person to
complain to was the chair-person of the English
department, so she went.
The following recantation of the hap-penings
in the chair-person's (Janet Camesi's )
office came directly from Miss Serrano and are as
such as accurate as possible. This reporter made
repeated efforts to contact Prof. Camesi but each
time she was either unavailable for comment or
