Taking Pride in Farmingdale
By Joe Puccio
Rambler Staff Writer
We're all familiar with what is known as
"red tape", but Craig Meisner and Tim Rossi
have an intimate relationship with the stuff. They
had to go through a lot of it to bring back this
years Pride in Farmingdale Environmental day
after a 9 year absence. They made it happen but
not alone.
As Presidents of the Sociology and An-thropology
club, and Phi Theta Kappa respec-tively,
Craig and Tim made their proposal to the
Vice President of Administration and Finance,
George P. Larosa, and eventually got the go-ahead
for the Pride in Farmingdale Environ-mental
day.
Once approved, the day had to be organ-ized.
It was up to Craig and Tim to obtain support,
supplies, and whole lot of cooperation. They ap-proached
the Student Government Assoc. and
were given support in the form of free T-shirts
and hats, mugs (which will soon be available for
sale at food services) and use of the Little Theatre
for the opening presentation of the days activi-ties.
The 5 dollar cost of the mug does not only
buy the mug, but also entitles the owner to half off
the price of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for
unlimited use. The two then went to the town of
Babylon and obtained the free services of Evan
R. Liblit. They also received the services of
Steven A. Romalewski of Public Interest Re-search
Group Inc. The two men were the guest
speakers who gave inspiration to all attending in
the Little Theatre before the actual clean-up.
The Physical Plant gave the day a phe-nomenal
amount of help. The Plant supplied
signs for the campus garbage pails, bags for the
clean-up, gloves and the use of the trucks that
were used to load and unload the campus's many
trash receptacles as well as a few new ones which
the plant also supplied. In an even more inspiring
move the Physical Plant also donated the services
of over 20 of their own workers to assist with the

clean-up!
Craig and Tim received additional sup-port
when Jones Beach agreed to lend the cam-pus
many pick up sticks which were used to
snatch up papers from the ground. Some of these
sticks however have been lost and must be paid
for by the Student Government Assoc., so if any
are found please return them and help remove the
single damper on the otherwise fully successful
day.
The activities took place on November 2
and succeeded in filling about 200 bags with
garbage collected from the one half of the 384
acres owned by this campus (only one half of the
acreage on this campus is actually in use by the
school).
Since Pride in Farmingdale day received
so much support from the students and did so
much to raise the awareness of students, it will
soon be proposed to the Student Government
Assoc. that environmental day be fully rein-stated.
This will mean having one such day each
semester, just as it was 9 years ago. Why this day
was stopped 9 years ago still remains unclear to
this reporter, but hopefully it will soon return.
The reinstatement of Environmental day
alone however, is not enough. Even though it
helps inform day students of the garbage prob-lem,
there is still very little literature or activities
available to enlighten our night students, and it
shows. Night school litter is not just a problem,
but a big problem here at SUNY Farmingdale.
Every day clean-up trucks must take long strained
hours to sweep and vacuum up piles of trash,
some admittedly from day students but most from
people at night. The shame is that if there was not
so much litter our clean-up people would have
more time to make repairs around the campus.
That would benefit everyone, so even with the
probable reinstatement of Environmental day this
reporter firmly believes that further steps should
be taken to bring the clean-up message to
everyone. After all, we all have to be here so why
not cooperate? We can, and Pride in Farmingdale
Environmental Day is one very good example of
how.
