Campus Violence Spurs Action

In recent times there has been a proverbial
'surge' of violence on college campuses in New
York and across the United States.
In a recent Federal Bureau of Investigation
Uniform Crime Report released on August 6, of
this year it was stated that most violent crimes
that happen on college campuses are done most
often by indi\'iduals who have no association
with the colleges themselves. These crimes are
not your 'run of the mill' fist fights but things
such as rape, robbery, and assault.
S.U.N.Y. Farmingdale is no exception to
this violence. At the recent United Black Council
campus party on September 28,1989 there were
two acts of assault outside of Roosevelt Hall. Of
these two acts, only one involved a student here
at S.U.N.Y. Farmingdale and he was at the re-ceiving
end of the assault.
S.U.N.Y. Farmingdale, in an effort to
deal with campus violence has formed a commit-tee
of students, administration members, and
campus police. The committee's job will be to
devise a reasonable and viable solution. This is
unlike a majority of colleges in the U.S., who are
leaving the security of their campuses to none but
the Campus or University Police.
According to Assistant Dean for Student
Life Programming, Mike Daniels, a few of the
current ideas that the committee is deliberating
on are 1.) To put up a fence around the whole of
the Campus 2.) To put up gates at the entrances
of Campus 3.) To have all of the events or parties
on Campus have certain 'themes' to them so that
it would be easy to discern 'people off the street'
from students here at S.U.N.Y. Farmingdale. Mr.
Daniels also stated that until such a time when the
committee comes up with a solution and enacts it
all campus parties will be postponed until further
notice.
The Campus Activities Board, which in
essence contributes to most every activity here at
Farmingdale, was the hardest hit by this morato-rium.
Maddie Thorpe, the President of C.A.B.,
expressed "It is the responsibility of the campus
community to recognize those factors that con-tribute
to the violence and to prevent those vio-lent
individuals drawn to our school, from enter-ing
the campus.".
