Awareness l\/lonth
:ial To The Rambler
A toll-free student financial aid information hot-line
and an hour long educational television program will
be the highlights of "Financial Aid Awareness Month"
(FAAM) in January, Dr. Cornelius J. Foley, president of
the New York State Higher Education Services Corpora-tion
(HESC), announced today. Free seminars, college
fairs and college nights, will be held throughout the state to
inform parents and students about available financial aid
programs to help pay the costs of higher education. These
services are being jointly sponsored by HESC and the New
York Financial Aid Administrators Association
(NYSFAAA).
The student aid hotline, 1-800-367-2670, will be
in operation from January 2nd through the 31st, weekdays,
noon to 7:00 p.m. Students and parents may call toll-free
and speak to financial aid experts on anyu aspect of student
financial aid.
The television program, "Paying for College
'90," will be broadcast on most Public Broadcasting
Service stations in New York on January 17 at 10:00 p.m.
Major cable stations around the state will also air the
program at various times in january. Channel information
for viewers will be listed locally.
During the show Dr. Foley is joined by John
View, president of NYSFAAA, in answering the most
common questions about student financial aid such as:
"What kinds of aid are there? Who is eligible? How do
you apply?"
The program also includes a videotaped excerpt
of a speech made by Govemer Cuomo in which he de-scribes
the Liberty Scolership program, the centerpiece
of his "Decade of the child" initiative. Liberty Scholor-ships
will become available in the fall of 1991 and are
intended primarily for low-income students.
Noting that the purpose of Financial Aid Aware-ness
Month is to make financial aid information more
readily available to students and the public. Dr. Foley added
that, January is the month when current and prospective
students should begin applying for state, federal and college-sponsored
financial aid for the 1990-91 academic year. Fi-nancial
aid applications for the coming school year are now
available in high school guidence and college financial aid
offices throughout the state.
In proclaiming January "Financial Aid Awareness
Month" Govemer Cuomo stated, "access to postsecondary
education is important to New York's future as a citadel of
higher education and as a center for the development of high
technology. It is fitting that the state with the first and largest
student financial aid system, and the state that leads the
nation in motivating and assisting students to achieve suc-cess
in higher education through the Liberty Scholorship and
