Serious Food For Thought

This semester the sociology and anthro-pology
club has made a commitment to the Spring
Meadow school of Organic Farming and Gar-dening.
This entails the filling of an eighteen
wheeler truck with canned foods for the hurri-cane
stricken people of Jamaica.
As you know in the middle of September
Hurricane Gilbert, the most powerful Atlantic
storm ever recorded, hit the island of Jamaica. As
the storm winds reached over two hundred miles
an hour, it destroyed almost everything in it's
path. The brutality and violence that this storm
created was almost completely inconceivable.
During it's wrath, Gilbert killed over 200 people
and left four out of five home destroyed. Of the
two and a half million people who live in the area,
five-hundred thousand were suddenly homeless
and starving. Their crops and tourist hotels were
left in a shambles. This put a lot of Jamaicans into
poverty.
Now that Gilbert has left his scar and his
path of sorrow throughout Jamaica, it is time for
us to get involved.
After getting all the facts, the Sociology
and Anthropology Club decided to immediately
get involved in helping the Jamaicans in their
time of need. They took the challenge of helping
fill an eighteen wheeler with canned foods. When
this truck is full, it's cargo is going to be sent to
Jamaica. The truck is almost half-full and the
Soc/Anth Club need your help in fiUing the rest.
The Soc/Anth Club is personally com-mitted
to this issue and we need you to help. Yes
You!! These people need our help. If it were you
in this situation, you would be happy to know that
there are people out there who care. PLEASE
join in the fight for life in Jamaica by bringing in
one of two cans from home. If you can't bring in
canned goods, please just pass the word on.
These cans will be collected for the next three
weeks. You can drop off as many cans as you'd
like at the Rambler office or at the Student
Activities Office (both located in Roosevelt Hall)
Do not take this issue lightly. They need all the
help that they can get.
The Spring Meadow School and the
people of Jamaica will thank you greatly for your
contributions.
