KA. 'S NOT HAPPY WITH NEW PHONES By Lisa Jenkins & Carol Calavetta
The Administration of
SUNY Farmingdale decided at
the begining of this semester
not to allocate funds for the
monthly costs of the Resident
Assistant's (RA.'s)telephones
in the dorms, funds that the
Administration has given the
RA-'s for many years. This
decision was made without any
preliminary discussion with the
officials of Resident life and the
RA.'s, an action that has left
many RA's frustrated and
without an essential tool for
security in the eight building
community on Farmingdale's
campus.
Mr. Schnell, Director of
Campus Police stated that
communication is a neccess-ity
for Dorm security. It is for
this reason that the R.A.'s
feel phones are an essential
tool for campus security.
The safety of Dorm students
and vistors depends many
times on how quickly the
Campus Police can respond.
While R.A.'s do their best to
prevent vandalism and other
criminal acts, they can't be
expected to get involved in
dangerous and violent
stituations.
This is not to imply that the
RA.'s have no way to reach
the Campus Police. The
Administration came up with
a new system when they
decided not to allocate funds
for the phones. Every R.A.
has a telephone in their room
which is directly connected
to the telephone in the offices
of the Campus Police. The
problem is this hookup isn't
the most secure system. All
the R.A.'s phones in each
dorm are hooked up with a
telephone in the lobby.
When that lobby phone is
vandalised (As is often the
case) all the rest of the phones
go dead. This is why the
RA.'s prefer regular tele-phones.
The Administration has
over the years agreed to pay a
certain percentage of
the RA's telephone bills
for on-campus and local
off-campus calls. This year,
the Administration has
decided not to pay any
percentage at all.
"The new phone system

well," said one R A. who pre-fered
not to be identified.
"Because of some jerk who
ripped the receiver off the
hook in one dorm lobby, one
RA. had to use a pay phone
to call the infirmary about
a dorm student who was
sick. What if it was for an
emergency? There are also
times when R.A.'s have to
make emergency off-campus
calls, like to parents. One
RA. had to call Mid-Island
Hospital to see how one of her
residents from her dorm was
doing. These calls can't be
made on the new R.A.
phones because the lines are
open to on-campus calls
only. This means the R.A.'s
have to pick up the cost on
their telephone bills. I don't
think it's right that the college
is no longer helping us with
these phone costs."
"The College recognizes
the importance of RA.'s
having telephones," said
Mr. Noel Palmer, Vice
President for Student
Affairs. "The main reason
why we went to this new
system is because it has more
services, for instance it has a
Call Back system. Unfort-unately
there are some
problems that have to be
worked out. Hopefully,
when we are given the new
budget, we'll receive the
necessary funds to perfect
the system."
That new budget won't
come until next year, un-fortunatly.
What to do in the
meantime?
"We've very concerned
about the stituation," said
Luis Garcia, President
of the Inter-Dormitory
Council (IDC). "So is
Student Government
President, Maureen Leyes.
The SGA is currently work-ing
with IDC and the
Administration in develop-ing
a solution that will
hopefully benefit all
involved."
