HELLO ALUMNI
HOMECOMING DAY
by Harry Holsten
The biggest clay of the year in
the lives of the Institute's Alumni
is Homecoming Day. This annual
event, held on the last Saturday
in October, unites the past grad-uates
of the Institute for a day
of fun and merry-making. This
year it will be held on October 31.
In the past, Homeciming Day
has always been a success. Last
year, over 800 Alumni returned
to their Alma Mater for this great
day.
This year's Homecoming Day
will be no exception, judging from
the plans made by the Home-coming
Committee, headed by Mr.
Haas. To start things off with a
bang, there will be a Cross Coun-try
meet with Queens College, at
11:00 A. M. On the Soccer field,
at 11:30 A. M., our soccer team
will play N. Y. S. Maritime Col-lege.
Lunch will be served to the
Alumni in Knapp Hall at 12:30
P. M. Movies of the Institute will
be shown at 1:00 P. M. and a
repeat performance at 3:00 P. M.,
in the Industrial-Technical Build-ing.
After lunch, the various clubs
of the Institute will stage a float
parade on the football field. An
Alumni committee will select the
best float and will award a prize
to the club sponsoring it. At 2:00
P. M., following the parade, the
New York Aggies will play the
Stockbridge Aggies. Tours of the
Poultry and Tech Buildings will
start at 4:30. A buffet supper will
be served from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M.
in Knapp Hall. Following supper,
an Alumni meeting will be held
in the gym. The final event of
the day will be the Alumni Dance,
starting at 9:C0 P. M., in Knapp
Hall.
CAMPUS PERSONALITIES
F'red Meinzen is our nominee
for personality of the month. He
has always proven himself to be
one of the most friendly and versa-tile
students on the campus. He
is hard working and never gets
behind in his work.
On September 11, 1952, Fred
started school here in the Dairy
Industry Course and roomed at
Alumni Hall. He became a waiter
at Knapp Hall to help pay his
expenses. In the month of October
he ran for Treasurer of the Fresh-man
Class on the Agrarian Party,
and also played basketball for the
"Comets" who finished runner-up
in the Ag Basketball League. In
the spring he played softball on
the "Crabs" who finished in top
spot on the Ag campus.
As we started classes again this
September, we found Fred holding
down the position as head waiter
of Knapp Hall. He received this
position because of his record as
a hard worker last year. He was
appointed a member of the Dorm
Council of Knapp Hall, and this
year he plans to go out for Varsity
Track, Intra-Mural Basketball and
Softball.
If we were to take a look at
his high school activities we would
see just how busy he was. In his
freshman year he was elected Vice-
President of his class, played Frosh
Football, and was Chairman of
the Frosh Prom. In his Sophomore
and Junior years, he played Var-sity
Football, Track and Basket-ball.
In these two years he was
also elected President of his class.
In his Senior year he was again
elected President of his class and
President of the Student Council.
Ho was a member of the Dramatic
Club and took part in three of
their presentations. When June
came around, he was made Chair-man
of the Senior Prom. He made
the Varsity teams again, too. Val-ley
Stream Central High School
can well be proud of Fred.
THE HARVEST HOP
by Marie DeBetta and Peter Davis
The Harvest Hop, which was
sponsored by the Senior Class, was
a roaring success and will not be
easily eclipsed by following dances.
The atmosphere provided by the
excellent arrangements and decor-ations,
and the subdued lighting,
fell right into the mood of the
evening. Special mention must be
made of the attractive cornucopia
arrangement by Deborah Hazard.
Several members of the faculty
also attended. Among them were:
Mr. and Mrs. Dougher, Mr. and
Mrs. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. James,
and Mrs. Blanchard.
Due to the fact that the sched-uled
band couldn't appear, there
was a substitute band who really
did a bang-up job on such short
notice. They featured several lively
numbers - from Charlestons to
Latin-American music.
In a short while, the dancing
space diminished. This was caused
by the rapidly increasing numbers
of couples. For the first dance of
the year, there really was a good
turnout.
The seniors also did a good job
of providing enough refreshments
for such a crowd.
