This is a beginning for all
students coming to Farm-ingdale
College this Fall. For
some this is the beginning of a
college career and for others
the beginning of the second
year. Either way beginnings are
difficult. Adjustments must be
made - a new time schedule -
different people - different
surroundings. These are
difficult' times, but also
challenging and exciting.
Farmingdale College offers
you opportunities to improve
your life in many ways. Your
academic program will prepare
you for employment after two
years, or for transfer to a
baccalaureate degree granting
college. You will be able to
explore life from many
perspectives both in, and out,
of class. You can test out your
potential by getting involved in
student government where
leadership skills may be learned
and developed.
Social skills may be
developed and learned
through meeting others and
accepting responsibility for
community service in clubs and
Paul E. BedeU, PH.D.
Vice President Student Affairs
organizations. Dances,
concerts, athletics and
recreational activity also
provide opportunities to meet
others. Workshops are
available to help you cope with
academic problems, man-agement
of time, control of
stress «od worry, test anxiety
and,. , many others.. Be an
involved student. If you cut
into your college experiences
with too much off-campus
employment, you will diminish
yvlx^ educational srowth
accordingly. Concentrate on
college - really get into it - and
you will profit considerably.
There are many services
available to help you succeed.
There is a Student Develop-ment
Center in Laffin Hall to
help you with any problems
you may have. They will refer
you for specialized assistance
as the need arised. Counselors
and psychologists are available
to help with career exploration,
job search techniques, resume
writing, academic and personal
counseling and therapy, course
changes, withdrawing from
college and many other areas
that students identify. Faculty
are available for help during
their office hours which are
posted on their office doors.
Tutoring is available from Phi
Theta Kappa in Roosevelt Hal.
Reading and other remedial,
assistance may be obtained by
contacting Dean Rodriguez in
Laffin Hall.
Medical services may be
obtained in the infirmary which
is open 24 hours a day during
the time classes are in session.
For any emergency or other
assistance contact the Campus
Police office 420-2111, which is
also open 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Please
consult the Student Handbook
atid the College catalog for
many other free services which
are available to you.
You have embarked on a
new step in your life.
Beginnings are difficult. Work
hard to get a good start. Use the
help that is available to you.
Enjoy your time with us.
Best wishes for success. -

My name is Charles Egan, President of the
College Union Board (C.U.B.). Are you nervous
about starting school, learning about the
campus, and meeting people? So was I when I
started school here. One thing to help you feel
more relaxed is the fact that everyone is here for
the first time, seeing strange faces and places.
They are just as scared as you are.
I know the way I solved these problems. I got
involved and so should you. The campus has
many clubs for you to choose from. I made many
friends as .well as helping represent the school ip
providing the kind of entertainment the students
want to see. That is what C.U.B. is all about.
C.U.B. is run by a group of students along with
their advisor. This group programs, promotes,
and works the activities. These activities are
provided with you mandatory Student Activity
Fee. You should find out where your money goes
and how it is spent. Everyone likes to complain
but no one wants to do anything more than that.
If you are interested in sharing your ideas and
helping plan this years* activities, come to our
first meeting at 11:00 on Thursday, September
II in the Loft Lounge. You can look at your 2
years here two ways; apathetically, saying how
bored you are and that there's nothing to do, or
optimistically, saying how there's only two years
before you hit the big world. Now is the time to
have fun and, make the best of 2 years, and GET
INVOLVED. Farmingdale offers a lot. It is only
what you take advantage of, that counts. Make
the best of it. Have fun and if you need a friend,
we're here waiting!
Charles Egan
