In the first place, Fd like to
know who's responsible for
risking the safety and well-being
of the students here at
Farmingdale. Fm sure not
many people are aware of the
incident that took place in
Lupton on Wednesday, April
30; and although the details are
not absolutely clear, I shudder
to think of what MIGHT have
happened. A chemical, which
reportedly had been on the
shelf in one of the chemistry
labs in Lupton since 1969, or
perhaps even longer, had
turned into a potentially
explosive form of that element.
Now, supposedly, it was
discovered on Monday or
Tuesday. Why was NO
ACTION taken until Wedned-day
to remove this now-

recognized DANGEROUS
chemical from a Hall where
literally hundreds of students
go to learn every day? On
Wednesday, dozens of campus
police and administrators were
involved. The fire department
was called and Suffolk Bomb
Squad were called. I think the
situation could be termed
SERIOUS! The students were
evacuated at that time, but it
seems that the safety of anyone
(everyone?) in that section of
the building was endangered
until then. Perhaps you could
get to the bottom of all this and
let us students know exactly
what went down!
Well Maria, I went to talk to
Dr. Mark. He's the Chair for
studies in the field of chemistry.
He refered me to a Mr.
Dellaquilla, who I. learned
later, is the Vice President for
the Administration. This fella'
was pretty helpful in
explaining the whole thing to
me. It seems the American
Chemical Society held an
inspection on Tuesday in
Lupton Hall. They warned Dr.
Mark that a chemical called
isobutylvinyl ether could
become potentially dangerous
if you let it sit around for too.
many years. The Society
cautioned that if the liquid
form of this chemical was
allowed to crystalize, it was to
be considered explosive, and
treated accordingly. Wednes-day
morning, when the good
Doctor came on the job, he
checked this chemical out first-thing.
He reportedly counted
NEW CONSTITUTION NEEDED?
As a member of the SUNY at
Farmingdale College Com-munity,
I wish to address
myself to the policies which
govern the student government
of our school. According to our
senate, which is the main body
that distributes our student
activity fee,all motions made at
meetings concerning any aspect
of student- life that are
discussed must follow the rules
and regulations as stated in the
constitution: The written law of
the senate. However, due to the
fact that this year's constitution
was not reused and has not
been for several years, the
senate is guiding itself by
outdated rules. Not only are the
rules outdated but the
constitution booklets itself is
unobtainable, not only Ho!
students but to the senators
themselves smce there is
presently only one copy of the
constitution that exists to the
knowledge of our governing
body. This has led to oral
policies being handed down to
the senators of the campus, the
majority of which feel that they
can not serve the students to
their best ability under such
unwritten policies. The senate
is a very able body. Their power
concerning the welfare of the
students should stay within
guidelines that are mutually
agreeable to the senate as well
as the students. It should be the
sole responsibility of these
combined bodies alone to make
the decisions concerning
students.
As students we should stand up
and aid next years senate in
enacting adequate laws and
assisting them in their
continued fight to obtain
student rights. After all who
should have the say about
where our students money to
allocated if it is not the students
themselves.'

four bottles "on the shelT and
in holding one up to the light,
noticed a few crystals floating
around in one of them. Dr.
Mark immediately notified the
administration of this, and the
scene you describe in your
letter prevailed. It was the
Suffolk Emergency Services
Team that showed up (the
"bomb squad"). These guys
removed the chemical and
burned it. So, the whole deal
wasn't so drawn out after all. In
fact. Dr. Mark wasn't sure of
the actual presence of the
chemical until Wednesday
morning. The Emergency
Team showed up at about 9:30
a.m., so they must have been
called early. Nobody who
doesn't work for them, is very
BIG on the Administration
around here, or very willing H)
take their side. But it seems that
THIS TIME they did their part
in removing a health hazard
from campus as soon as was
humanly possible, and they
even took precautions to have
it removed SAFELY.
NO MORE QUESTIONS!!
This is our last issue, so I'm not
gonna' answer any of them
anyway! To those who took the
time: Thanks for your interest.
To those APATHETIC
individuals whose numbers are
greater: WAKE UP! APATHY
IS NOT THE WAY TO
UTOPIA!!

REFERENDUM PASSED 357-92
Well, I'm sure you'U all be
happy to hear that the
referendum vote was passed by
a margin of 3 to 1. Many of the
students felt that voting yes was
not worth the extra expense but
in all actualit)^t was worth it. It
had to pass^ otherwise there
wouldn't be anything here next
year. For all of you cynics out
there, these few items should
clear up a few things.
By having the referendum
pas%it will help the students by
having funded units and all
other clubs on campus nuch as
the radio station and the school
paper. The extra $S will clear
up deficits of nearly $60,000 in
the red. If the referendum had
been voted down, then next
year there wouldn't be any
movies or any concerts; you
would have to pay for the
Islander yearbook and
countless other items. Alsc^
extra cirricular activities would
more than likely be cut out. So
all in all^ what seems like
anothercase of the classic rip-off
isn't and will definitely
benefit students returning to
Farmingdale the following
year.
