INCOMING FRESHMAN
BY CAROLINE BOSSERT
Being new to any place be it
school, job or living condition
can sometimes be a trying
situation for some while being a
an inspiring experience'for
others.
Even before we reach our
clases, registration day awaits
us. On that fateful day we wait
on long lines, pay for our first
semester, pick up our schedules
(if we get them at all) an at the
end of all this we try to smile
cheerfully while we get our
school I.D. pictures taken,
which we either like or hate
automatically.
Now we're officially college
freshmen, but are we? Can this
transuion from high school
senior to College freshman be so
quick and definite? One student
summed up the answers to
these two questions quite
concisely when he said. Time
will tell." The adjustments we
ourselves make will predict our
outcome at the end of the
semester if not the year.
September 5lh comes, which
is the first day of school, and we
go down and change our
schedules and then we haxily
try to find our way around the
c a m p u s . We pass our
destination many times and
walk in circles and wonder how
we will eventually know the
scheme of things. It isn't
difficult since one can easily ask
any person for assistance. Most
would agree that generally
Farmingdale students and
faculty are friendly, helpful
people.
Finally we reach our classes;
we sit and check out what our
teachers are like. School is
here. The realization hits us.
In interviewing various
i n c o m i n g freshmen on
positive and negative points oif
the first few days at
Farmingdale, I received
someinteresting responses. One
vocal student said of his
impressions of the first few
days, 'T>Iothing.* So I went on
to another more enthusiastic
student who said. Teachers
gave a good impression. I'd like
to thank the department
chairman for such big gaps in
my schedule yet all in all the
facilities overcome these
inadequacies to make the
school a pleasant place to go
to.'
The negative aspects of
college life were quite varied.
ONe person. said this of th
cafeteria, 'Although I'm feeling
high being a freshman and
enjoying ail the facilities of
campus life, the lunchroom
makes me feel like I'm a senior
in high school. While one
student said he felt the food was
reasonably priced, another
student felt the food was
overpriced. He said about a
cheeseburger he ate the first
day of school, 'I know why we
have an oil shortage in our
country and why it is getting
more serious by the minute."
Yet others remarked about the
long book store lilnes, walking
outside in bad weather (for
instance typhoon winds on
Sept. 6), the inaccuracy of
clocks (so wear a watch!), or
the classrooms being too hot
(gee we all need to lose a little
weight once in a while, so let's
sweat through our courses in
more ways than one).
While it may be easy to find
faults with any institutions, it is
just as easy to find good points
as well. For instance, one
student said. There are lots of
things to do at Farmingdale
...go to the Ram's Den, swim at
the pool, thr bsk in
the sun and soak up some
rays...Basically it's what you
want to do with your time.
which determines what you'll
get out of school. With free
t i m e , there comes the
independence of the individual.
It's all up to oneself; there is no
one telling you what to do. LA
male freshman said of college
life. There are a lot fo girls, the
classes are interesting, the
school is closse enough for
commuting and it was
comforting to see familiar
faces.'
All in all the Farmingdale
experience will be what we
make of it. Our attitudes are of
great importance in determin-.
ing where we will go in life. The
classes, student activities, and
social life are all for the taking
to develop ourselves intellec-tually
and emotionally for we
re our own keys.
