THE NEW ROOSEVELT
by Joe Tumbarello and
Debby Beitch
In October 1975 the Student
Activities Office, along with the
cooperation of the Student
Government Association,
College Planning Office and
College Maintenance, began
t h e m o d e r n i z a t i o n of
Roosevelt Hall.
On Tuesday, September 7,
1976, administrators, faculty
and students gathered in
Roosevelt Hail for the official
rededication ceremonies.
Dr. Paul E. Bedell, Vice
President of Student Affairs,
gave a welcoming address to all
in the Little Theatre. The
Keynote Address was then
given by Dr. Charles W. Laffin,
Jr., President of the College. In
his speech. Dr. Laffm stated
how proud he was of the
numerous improvements that
had taken place in less than one
year.
Despite flack from Albany, it
was Dr. Laffin who donated
the three million dollar
Roosevelt Hall to the students.
In appreciation for his
guidance and support. Marc
Sanders, President of the
Student Government Associ-ation,
presented Dr. Laffin
with a plaque during the
dedication ceremonies.
After the Ribbon ceremony,
tours of the building and its
facilities were hosted by the
Student Activities Office.
Afterwards, a reception was
held in the Roosevelt Hall
Entertainment Complex.
Much of the work done in
Roosevelt was completed
thanks to the help of sommer
w o r k s t u d y s t u d e n t s.
Throughout the summer these
students could be seen painting
and fixing up things
throughout the building.
The many changes that have
taken place in Roosevelt will
not be as noticeable to our
incoming freshmen as it will be
to our returning seniors.
Nevertheless, there are many
things that you can*t help but
notice are new. For instance,
the Sweet Shop located in the
Lobby of Roosevelt was
completed over the summer.
Other major changes include
the Mural in front of Rooseveh
by Lori Marabella. This mural
depicts various student
organizations such as Student
G o v e r n m e n t , I s l a n d e r,
Rambler, W.A.T.C. and
C.U.B., all of which are housed
in Roosevelt Hall. The mural
also illustrates many of the
different services available
here.
The snack bar and lounge,
known as Alice's Restaurant,

redecorating. Food Services
provided the money needed for
this remodeling.
The new Health Club, or
Flab Factory as it is more
commonly known, was the first
area to be renovated, beginning
in June 1975.
Before its completion, the
Flab Factory went through
numerous changes which
included the removal of
lockers, cement work, painting,
a new floor and the installation
of physical fitness equipment.
Originally funded by S.G.A.,
other campus organizations
have been helping to support
the Flab Factory. The Disabled
Students Office has provided
some equipment and the
Evening College funded the
repairing of the weight training
equipment.
Oringinally in the basement
of Knapp Hall, W.A.T.C.
Radio Station has been
relocated into Roosevelt Hall.
The radio station is now
equipped with control,
engineering, production and
recording facilities.
The Recreation Center was
completely redecorated.
Facilities include bowling
l a n e s , b i l l i a r d s t a b l e s,
shuffleboards, ping pong
tables, and foosball and pinball
machines.
The Club Center which has
been repainted will be
refurnished with color coded
desks and filing systems and
will provide clubs with storage
space.
The Ram's Den Tavern and
Roosevelt Hall Entertainment
Complex will be providing a
variety of activities and
programs throughout the year.
All work that was needed to
convert this area from a men's
locker room to the Entertain-ment
Complex was donated by
S.G.A.
The r e d e d i c a t i o n of
Roosevelt does not mean an
end to its further development.
Through the kind of dedication
and guidance received in the
past, the possibilities are
endless.
SGA:
What it can do for you
The Student Government
Association is the center of all
activities located on the
Farmingdale campus.
The S.G.A. is run by the
students who distribute the
mandatory activity fee (which
is S35.00) to all clubs and
organizations that are eligible
to receive funding for trips,
speakers, loans, grants, etc. It
also has authority over all the
student organizations, plus the
fact that the S.G.A. is involved
in implementing changes in
campus policy.
The S.G.A. elections are
being held October 26th-28th.
Two freshmen and two seniors
are elected from each division.
Some of the college
committees the Student Senate
is involved with are the
Admissions and Academic
Standards, Faculty-Student
A s s o c i a t i o n , C a l e n d a r,
Alcohol Policy, Blood Bank,
S.e.A. President

Orientation, Safety Division,
and Tavern Committees.
The S.G.A. can't be run
without you, the students, so
get involved.
Yours in service.
Marc Sanders
